Georgi Belev (from Ohrid) describes the Bulgarian government’s 1903 crackdown on Macedonian-Adrianople committees in Bulgaria. He states that despite this, the revolutionary movement in Macedonia grew independently and the Ilinden uprising was declared by locals. He stresses it was a native deed of the Macedonians themselves inside Macedonia, not dependent on Bulgarian governments, politicians, tsars, or external committees.
