The area sown with potatoes by Russian farmers this year has fallen to the lowest it's been in the last 18 years. The reason is that it's currently unprofitable to grow potatoes. Purchase prices are now 22,9 rubles when production costs are 33-36 rubles.

At some point a part of the farmers, steel makers and coal mines will have to be bumped off the shipping lists and only the best connected ones will remain with access to the Baltic train infrastructure. Transhipment capacity at ports isn't the bottleneck here anymore.
