I wrote a new paper describing Calibrated Basic Income, a macroeconomic policy in which an adjustable #UBI supports aggregate consumer spending.
Keeping the UBI adjustable is key to both preventing inflation and maximizing the benefit to consumers.

Perry Mehrling understood money and banking like no one else.
He liked to write short books, not long ones. "People don't finish reading long books," he would say. He wanted readers to finish his books.
Perry wasn't done. Let's keep it going.

What problem does a #UBI actually solve?
UBI delivers money to people in a reliable, efficient way, saving us from having to generate makework. My colleague Philip Jackson explains in his new blog post:

My colleague Phil Jackson at @GreshmInstitute recently gave this talk on the economics of UBI.
Automating away unpleasant work should be good for society, yet removing jobs from our economy seems to harm people. UBI resolves this apparent paradox.

Instead of the Fed lowering interest rates today, we could have had a Universal Basic Income.

An efficient and productive economy always needs both UBI to fuel consumption, and wages to motivate labor.
As labor-saving technology improves, the necessary balance between UBI and wages shifts in UBI's favor.
Striking the right balance of UBI & wages doesn't cause inflation.

Labor-saving technology will advance faster if we expect to use it. Universal Basic Income helps us get the most out of labor-saving technology.

UBI is a cash delivery method or system; it is often paired with novel taxes as part of a package deal, but the tax end is its own separate discussion.
Phil Jackson has a great take on a difference of opinion between @scottsantens and @elonmusk over Universal Income: should it be 'basic' or 'high'?

"Technology affects the level of UBI we can afford, not the feasibility of UBI itself."
Great interview with @AlexHowlettUBI and @Econoboi about #CMT and #BasicIncome.

If you've ever wondered what this whole #BasicIncome (UBI) thing is about, I just posted a revised version of my working paper, "The Natural Rate of Basic Income," which I presented at two conferences (BIEN and FRIBIS) in 2021.

There are important problems that #BasicIncome doesn't solve. It "merely" solves the problem of how to get people their money.

I like to emphasize that #BasicIncome is a mechanism for getting people money (i.e. even distribution to everyone paid out regularly) rather than a particular amount.
We can then ask what the optimal level of #UBI is given no other changes in fiscal policy. Is it zero?
#BostonBasicIncome's last episode made for a good summary of the show, and a preview for what's next. I was honored to have a small part in this group's contribution to the study of #BasicIncome.
