I’m conflicted as I read this Hypermedia book by the HTMX folks. Im realizing I don’t like XML because of SOAP, and I don’t like SOAP because early in my career I was forced to work with some terrible SOAP API’s.
Also, I’m not in love with REST and often reach for simple JSON API’s or gRPC. BUT I’m remaining open minded because the thin-client approach is appealing since I live on the backend nowadays for the most part.
This line from the book ‘Many younger web developers have grown up knowing nothing but Single Page Applications and the frameworks that are used to build them.’ … That is definitely me. I came in just as React was starting to gain traction and SPA’s were my introduction to web dev, VueJS being my top choice for a long time. I loved JavaScript, until I wrote about 10k+ lines of it and it really started to fight back.
