Our book is out and available for purchase in the U.K. Writing this book with @cacrisalves @SurbhiKesar & @ingridharvold was a long and arduous process that has arguably changed us all, and we’d be honoured for y’all to read it. Get it now from @politybooks and in bookstores!
Economics obscures or is oblivious to the politics embedded in theorization itself. In this book, @devikadutt, @cacrisalves, @SurbhiKesar & @ingridharvold return political questions to the heart of economic theorizing.

This is like when people claim to speak without an accent. All social science researchers have bias like all speakers have accents. We can discuss the best way to address these biases but it's childish or disingenous to pretend that any human studying other humans is objective.
The fatal challenge to heterodox economics is that there isn't actually orthodox economics. Just take a few recent Nobels: behavioral, information failure, institutions, bubbles, financial fragility, labor monopsony (sort of), Schumpeterian creative destruction, etc. Not to mention RCTs which are emblematic of how much economic research is empirical and only lightly if at all structural. The real difference is methods. Heterodox economics is an avowedly political project not a social scientific effort to better understand the world. And I have nothing against political projects just shouldn't confuse the two.

This is the frustrating thing about mainstream Econs. They see diversity of *topics* and think it represents genuine diversity in *theoretical foundations*. Completely oblivious to the historical narrowing of what counts as Economics that led us to this situation.
I would encourage anyone who criticized this with a litany of views about what they think economics is to read the Table of Contents of the most recent Quarterly Journal of Economics and then get back to me with updates.

I wish the FATAL challenge to mainstream economics was the proud ignorance of its own history and what even is heterodox economics. Might have something to do with politics, but who knows 🤭

And yep nothing political about late neoclassical economics (I guess this category is unintelligible too) or RCTs. Nothing weird or political about the “Nobel” in economics either.

Happy to be part of this @JournalSpectre roundtable on imperialism! My piece “the money fetish and empire” intervenes in the debates about the alleged imminent fall of the US Dollar by bringing in the connection between world money and global value relations
This fall's Spectre is a double issue featuring our roundtable on imperialism today with Scott Aquanno, Adam Hanieh, Kevan Harris ( @kevankharris ), Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven ( @ingridharvold ), Steve Maher ( @SteveMaher18 ), and Sirisha C. Naidu.

Anwar Shaikh’s brilliant teaching and scholarship helped an entire generation understand the inner logic of capitalism. He will be missed not only by colleagues and students in the field, but by the countless people whose understanding of the world was enriched by his work.

We lost our colleague and friend Anwar Shaikh yesterday. The moment is still too shocking and raw to offer a fitting celebration of his contributions to critical and radical economic thinking across five decades. For now, let his own words to @histmat journal describe the analytical and political visions Anwar left for us. @NSSRNews historicalmaterialism.org/an…

Rest in power, Anwar Shaikh. A giant of political economy and a major pillar for The New School community as well as the broader hetecon and Marxist space ❤️

Anwar Shaikh is one of the most important critics of capitalism. His work provides a fundamental understanding of it, recovering Marxist categories and going beyond them. Güney Işıkara and I tried to sketch an intellectual biography in @jacobin: jacobin.com/2026/04/shaikh-c…

I hope this episode with Ed Sheeran and Macklemore demonstrates to the masses how powerful we are collectively, how much power each of us holds individually to withdraw our consent and complicity, and refuse silence. Thank you to every musician who dropped out, and to every ticket holder demanding a refund and refusing to attend.

If you think this is crazy, wait till you hear how Larry Summers fired Joe Stiglitz as the World Bank's Chief Economist cause he couldn't take his critique of financial liberalisation after the 1997 East Asian crisis. American hegemony is not a Trump invention.

Mainstream economic models obscure the structural power dynamics at the core of global inequality. bit.ly/46bG2Ko Ingrid Harvold Kvangraven argues that capitalism has always been an inherently uneven, global system shaped by imperialism, class, and unequal power relations.
