Can you tell me who gave you what last Diwali? I am sure you will draw a blank...or nearly so What’s a Diwali gift people remember even 20 years later? We spend time choosing sweets and accessories but do the recipients remember them even a few months later? I’ve always believed in gifts that leave a lasting impression. 📚 This Diwali, what if you gifted someone a book instead? 'Money, Myths and Mantras' could be a great start to understanding money and investing. If you want to bulk order it, send a DM right away to @firstglobalsec And of course you can order some other books. Because those are the only gifts that are remembered decades later.

The sale was 2 years ago but for some reason it came up on my feed today. Rs 20/20.7 crores becoming 32 crores looks good TILL you do the math. Add the cost of stamp duty and registration at the time of purchase and the 7 years that passed in between, and you are looking at a just over 5% compounding Even if it was rented out, typically rental yields (annual rental income divided by the cost of the property) are low and don't leave much after property tax, maintenance etc Plus there was a loan against this property. It is almost certain the 5% compounding would not have covered the interest cost Also remember this is the best possible outcome as it includes land which not the case for most home transactions The bottom line is that real estate as investment does not workout for most people. Buying a single home to live in has other considerations and is not a purely financial decision #RealEstateInvesting

A book about drug running, history, economics and of course business What you didn't know you didn't know! Don't miss it And tell me what are you reading this weekend
Can a book about opium also be about business? In 'Smoke and Ashes' by Amitav Ghosh uncovers the surprising links between opium, colonial power, global trade and fortunes across the world from the Indian subcontinent to Eastern United States. It’s a side of business history we rarely talk about. Love books that challenge your perspective? Add this one to your reading list. Need help navigating markets and investing? All you see is a haze all around And you can in really feel it in your lungs when walking outside The whole city has become a construction site!
Mumbai Pollution: This is not a crisis. This is an emergency situation. In the garb of “infrastructure development” - we have let things go out of control.

Sharing some good news - getting The Most Powerful Women award from Business Today - this time for 2026 Sharing with your tribe is actually the only fun of any achievement... And of course you need the blessings of your elders and your gurus. And the best part is the joy from old teachers, old neighbours, family friends, parents and siblings of friends...people you may not have met for decades but who take such joy in your achievements Truly blessed to have many such in my life 🙏🙏🙏 Also in a broader sense while at IIM and in the earlier years of my career I thought all achievements were gender agnostic and I never underlined the woman part, now I do because I realise girls and young women do not have enough role models... And so many young women come up and say that "You are an inspiration that it can be done"... So now I take that role a bit seriously especially as women's causes have been close to my heart since age 10 Wearing a saree with a craft from my hometown and bangles gifted by a school friend to represent my roots and my friends and family... Because they are all a part of where I reached One of the highlights of the evening for me was this conversation with the captain and vice captain of the gold medal winning women's hockey team (which happened after some four plus decades)... And happened after a set back where they did not even qualify for the Olympics Navneet Kaur, the vice captain said that she regularly stands in front of the mirror and tells herself in Punjabi: "Navneet Kaur, there is no one better than you. You are the best." There was also the captain of the gold medal winning kabaddi team I thought there was the best panel of the evening As an aside all three of them said their favourite movie was Chak De 😄 Even the captain of the hockey team comes from a village where even till date there is no mobile signal. She used to go for her hockey practice sitting behind her father on a bicycle But she said she had this vision that she would excel in hockey All of them manifested the visions that the first had in their heads... Which is a lesson for all of us as most of us face neither their starting challenges nor the going head to head with the best in the world. Kudos to our champion sports people 👏👏👏 @business_today @firstglobalsec @fghumsmallcase

Higher profit margins always mean a better business. Right? Not necessarily. Two companies can operate in the same industry but follow very different business models. To understand which business is performing better, you need to look beyond profit margins. How? Watch this video to understand Want to comprehend financial ratios and analyse businesses better? A high ROE may look impressive, but I always believe in looking beyond the number. What’s driving it? Strong profit margins, efficient use of assets, or borrowed money? The answer can tell us a lot about a company and the risks behind its returns. In investing, understanding how a company generates returns matters just as much as the returns themselves. Have a question about analysing a company’s financials? DM @firstglobalsec

What are the theories you have learnt about markets? That markets are efficient with all information captured in market prices That market must be allowed free play and are self correcting What if all of it was WRONG? That not only are markets inefficient they are inefficient in certain PREDICTABLE ways... That insight resulted in one of the biggest trading fortunes in the world Here is why allowing markets free play, calculating Betas et al may actively mislead and sometimes lead to catastrophic consequences...and what needs to be done My column in Mint today @livemint @firstglobalsec @fghumsmallcase

Still believe in efficient markets, calculated betas et al?
#MintPremium | For long, the efficient market theory was the prevailing wisdom being taught in universities. But closer inspection reveals why this idea doesn't hold in real life. And who better to guide investors and regulators on how markets can go wrong than George Soros? livemint.com/opinion/online-… @devinamehra ✍️

Too often we conflate the success of a technology or theme with the success of investing in that theme... And yet history tells us something very counter intuitive The MOST SUCCESSFUL technologies are exactly where investors LOSE THE MOST How and why? See this video to find out!
What if the biggest investment losses don’t come from technologies that fail… but from those that succeed? It sounds counterintuitive, but market history tells us otherwise. When a technology succeeds, everyone wants a piece of it. Money pours in, valuations rise, and investors can end up paying far more than it’s worth. We’ve seen this before - over centuries in fact. And now, AI raises a similar question. Could a technology that transforms the world still be a bad investment? Watch. Share. Subscribe. Have a question about your portfolio or an investment theme you’re evaluating? DM @firstglobalsec #InvestingGuideByDevina
