Portland’s Royal Sonesta: bought for $108.3M in 2016. Now reportedly sold for $6.83M for 220 rooms—just $31,000 per key. A staggering 93.7% price collapse. This is what happens when government fails at public safety, downtown disorder spirals, Measure 110’s consequences go unaddressed, and Multnomah County’s mental-health system fails people in crisis. Tourism doesn’t thrive where visitors feel unsafe and downtown businesses struggle to survive. Portland didn’t get here by accident. Policy choices have consequences—and taxpayers, workers, businesses, and property owners are paying the price. @mitch4portland @pnwpolicyangel @TeacherTiff4PDX @kanalforpdx @MayorKWilson

How bad is administrative bloat in higher ed? At MIT, the “student body has grown by 8% and its faculty by 9% since the mid-1980s. By comparison, the tally of administrators jumped by 189%.”

The Oilers Entertainment Group are likely going to learn an expensive lesson. They tried to push ticket prices to extract the maximum value people would be willing to pay. Not an unreasonable idea in a simplistic market situation. Why let scalpers capture the scarcity profit? /1

The Left loves confrontational protest and hates incremental policy gains, so the fact that confrontational protest tends to be unpopular and incremental policy gains tend to be popular is a problem for them.
Yglesias is just correct here. Hasan is quoting a bunch of stats about how elements of the civil rights *protest movement* were unpopular, but the actual law was not.

The Soviet Union once single handedly drove several whale species to the brink of extinction because murdering them pointlessly was the best way to fulfil the fishing quotas set by communist bureaucrats in metric tonnes.

According to the book, Kushner got Tillerson fired for a $50 million UAE payment because Tillerson supported Qatar. This panicked Qatar because they realized Kushner was a pay-to-play operative, so they bought Kushner's New York City apartments, which were in the red, hoping this would help.
This book is really damning for Kushner. It claims the UAE paid Kushner $50 million to get Rex Tillerson fired as Secretary of State.

Obama may actually be a 4d chessmaster, getting this idiot to spend the last week telling everyone about all the expensive interior decorating he's been doing while gas in $4-5 bucks a gallon.
Trump appears hurt by Obama's Cheesecake Factory joke: I've taken care of the White House. I have fixed it with the finest artisans in the world. The exterior plaster was broken, cracked. And the painting was terrible. I've re-skinned the building beautifully. The White House is beautiful.

what's obviously behind the "wokeness" discourse is that relatively esoteric academic theory from the 1970s and 80s got dumped on people who had no context for it in the 2010s

reactionaries hollowed out the American soft power apparatus that was used to flip past Brazilian elections specifically bc they’re too stupid to understand that the woke USAID facade was the velvet glove concealing the iron fist of American hegemony. you need both to do this
USAID probably could've stolen that election for bolsonaro, if only the evil leftists in charge of the US hadn't dismantled it

dying that Bessent got to do this one. A man who has a home in Provincetown would never hang with the "Martha's Vineyard set."
Bessent cooks Obama after dining at the Cheesecake Factory: "This is the man who built the museum that looks like Darth Vader’s tomb... I had a great meal, and I would tell the Martha's Vineyard set to give it a try." 😭

I also love that being compared to Saddam Hussein just rolled off Trump’s and every other Republicans’ back. That was the actual insult guys!
Who could've guessed the joke would've baited Trump into spending the last week of the election talking more about his White House renovations?

I think there's a lot to be said for the theory that the WNBA enjoyed being, more or less, a subsidized social club for lesbian athletes and doesn't actually like their newfound spike in popularity.
