After reading the authors statement, what the Caine Prize did feels even worse.
Imagine having a child, and someone walking by the window screams over the fence: your child is a thief. You then whisper, junior, are you a thief. And junior says mum, don't mind him, he is that bully I told you about. This is because I won't give him my lunch money. And your mum says ah ok, yes, I believe you. Then this bully shows up with cameras to you your door and throws stones at your window and screams your child is a filthy thief. Bring him out here for us to hang him.
Then you, who swears you are a human-centred something something, drags your son out to the front porch, for the cameras to capture his face, and you tell the bully and even passersby who did not even hear what the bully said the first time: my son has been called a thief. This is a sad day. But please dear bully, as I hand over my son, let us do it all quietly while I go check if in fact my son is a thief. You know, I am saying this and presenting him to the world as a potential thief because I love him, I am human centred something-something. In fact I already searched his pockets and his school bag and everything. But I will strip search him next so that you can be satisfied, dear bully. I do love my son.
That is what the Caine Prize did, by using their social media to give more publicity to the article, the journalist (whose name even appeared before their own author's name in the letter, in bolder letters, what genius!), and the allegation -- they fed him to the wolves while claiming human-centred. Nothing about doing that was human centred. They just fed the beast. The only explanation is that they also have doubts about the story and are hedging, just in case they turn out to be right. Because if you truly believe him, that letter is unacceptable. Now he has to also write a statement of his own, which he should not be doing.

Unboxing my book baby had me all in my feelings. African steampunk was a challenge and I’m so proud of myself for pulling it off.💪
I started writing Alabi’s story in 2022. And I knew I’d always wanted it to be published as a standalone with a publisher. I feel so lucky to have it in my hands.
Special thanks to everyone who made this a reality! Most of them aren’t on twitter but thank you! And a thank you to @RuadanBooks

This is about how @LordBinary_, @chowdeck and the entire food delivery business has been moving like a cartel. And I think the people investing in them and doing business with them should be aware of this, if they are not already. They should be aware and know they are complicit in all the death, the bodies being caught by Chowdeck, or in reality, Chowdeath. @NovastarV @ycombinator @garrytan @paulg @GoodwaterCap @erickimSF @hoaqclub @yewiedewie
@NubiKay @joekinvi @LevareVentures @JuneAngelides , Simon Borrero and Juan Pablo Ortega of @RappiBrasil @RappiMexico @RappiColombia @RappiArgentina , Shola Akinlade & Ezra @0x Co-founders of @Paystack (@Stripe) in Sudeep Ramani of @SportyBet Ayo Arikawe of @thriveagric
To these companies and individuals that continue to have our death and blood and lives siphoned to feed them, demon investors. Write to them so they are aware, boycott them if they say nothing and prove their complicity in this.
It's an industry that depends on a steady river of blood to stay afloat. On Feb 14th, @LordBinary_ one of the chief blood drinking vampires coated the roads red, using his love rush abi blood rush promo. The entire Chowdeck moves like a cartel from top to bottom. Low value and total disregard for human life, use of threats, force and power to suppress and crush those in the way of their illicit gain.
After a Chowdeck rider hit me and fractured my spine, their supervisor came to threaten me who was with a fractured spine, because we asked him to take responsibility for our care. After threatening us, they left us on the road to die. We didn't get healthcare till like 9 hours later. My devices were broken, I was broken. I almost died several times that day. I remain in excruciating pain till today. Chowdeath has not taken responsibility for any of this, till today. Instead people threatening shooting, saying they were sent by Chowdeath have shown up at my home. They have hired the biggest law firm in Nigeria, Olaniwun & Ajayi for likely tens of millions of naira, to silence us, they have tried to arrest me and lock me and another victim of theirs up, using the illegal cybercrime act often used to silence free speech and dissent as @USinNigeria has warned. They claimed us their victims want to bomb their offices and kill their workers. I have this question for their foreign sponsors. Why do you keep funding this organization that uses using tactics your own country frowns on? To siphon the blood of Black people and Africans to you? Is this the new slavery and colonialism? Are these your new plantations?
The other day I saw a video of how Femi Aluko was talking about how cleverly he and his company uses data. So let's talk about data and the numbers shall we? @WPReview did a report on the numbers of deaths resulting from road use and which the logistics and delivery business is part of.
Lagos is one of the deadliest cities for drivers. 69 people killed in 600 collisions. That's over 10 percent fatality rate. 892 people were killed in clashes in 2025. If you divide the number of people who died by the number of days, you have almost three people dying every day. Get that? Every. Day. That's not talking about the ones being maimed permanently, getting wounded, losing livelihoods and properties. Almost three bodies. Every. Single. Day. Human beings. Your fathers, your mothers, your brothers, your sisters, your children, etc. including the family members of you investors, if they are here. Nkechi, Ahmed, Jide, etc. And who is at the receiving end of these bodies being ground to kilishi, being liquified, this ocean of blood being converted into cash? The cartel, and Femi fucking Aluko, there with a basin to catch every drop of blood and pour it into his greedy gullet.
You can see the quoted tweets for videos of all these things as they have been meticulously documented locally & internationally. @SaharaReporters, To @channelstv, @WPReview. But Chowdeck has not said a word
So I attended the police “invite” and saw the petition written against I and @PurityAddereth, the other victim was indeed by @chowdeck and defended by @OlaniwunAjayiLP lawyer @OdiaseYehoshua. In my opinion, the petition is an attempt to put us away, and silence us. The petition accused us their victims of trying to bomb their offices, kill their workers, specifically Victor, their Lagos operations manager and that we were a danger to all their workers and riders. These charges written there were conspiracy, threat to life and cyber bullying. But the makeup of the charges add up to nothing short of terrorism. This is why I said an attempt to put us away. The sentence for those can be similar to treason and attract a life sentence. They equated a writer, editor and publisher, and a fashion designer using their right to free speech after suffering gruesome damage, to people who can bomb their offices and kill their workers nation wide. You see where this is going with the cyber crime act? When I tell you this is an attack on all of us, our right to freedom of speech, dessent and criticism. Tell me how TF I am going to bomb anywhere when I need help bathing?
This is an abuse of the police process and a weaponization of the cybercrime act to punish dissent, criticism and free speech against writers, journalists and citizens as so many civil and human rights and other organizations have noted, including the US embassy, UK embassy, etc. so I will exhort to you all Nigerians and all in the international community to write to these embassies and ambassadors to see how this issue they have complained about is being used in this case to oppress what is Africa’s most decorated SFF writer-editor-publisher, including many others. You can write to them at these addresses in the pictures attached here, and handles below. Write to these international organizations to sanction through visas and other processes all those, persons and organizations in and of the Nigerian state, weaponizing the cybercrime act to silence criticism and free speech. The voice of everyone of us matters and free speech and the instruments of democracy must be protected.
Their CEO @LordBinary_'s address says San Francisco via X. You can't be in a place where you enjoy free speech, while bullying others here and stiffling their own by abusing the apparatus of law that is being misused to ruin this country further. So you all should write to the US and other embassies and state departments, all interested in protecting and punishing the violation of free speech and the instruments of democracy, to look into this. Unless this is now Russia or China. @USinNigeria @HCCanNigeria @UKinNigeria @RMontgomeryUK @NorAmbNigeria @HCSalvaggio
And I want you all to join your voices in insisting that Chowdeck
1. Show the public the petition they filed
2. Withdraw it formally
3. Issue a written apology
4. Release a public statement taking accountability
5. Call for the repealing of the Cybercrime act
Have you noticed the fact that Chowdeck, it's CEO hasn't said anything? What company accused of things these serious, for four months now, with a full pr department and board cannot say a word, even to the public actively demanding answers.
And to be clear, I attribute my accident and spinal fracture to the failures of Chowdeck and it's team. Feb 14 when I suffered the accident was a day when their love rush promo was in effect. They deliberately instigated a process that heightened movement and traffic without putting guardrails on this “rush”. One of the leading causes of accidents is fatigue. There are not enough guard rails on how many hours a rider can work. If anything they seem to instigate more activity, more “rush”. And that particular day, they did even more so. I blame the company, and @LordBinary_ . And until they take responsibility in all the ways they should, I will not stop speaking about this. And I will not be silenced. We must fight this, and the cybercrime act.
