Still can't make up my mind on software factories... This presentation made it even harder. On one hand, if you've been in the tech industry for a while, you see the need. On the other hand, as LLMs are capable of more and more, the upside of any particular software factory seems to diminish. Customization becomes "free" and the cost is maintenance in production. No code tools are fine, but most companies in this space struggled to scale. Eval frameworks feel very similar. You need so many domain specific nobs and switches, that it's easier to customize it for each specific use case. The "moat" becomes not a product that you sell, but intuition around how others have been and rebuild in a very particular way. Curious to see if/when one of them succeeds.

if you get FOMO every time a new model drops or some guy posts how he automated his entire job don’t everything is moving way too fast. there’s a new model, tool, agent, use case every day and 99% of it won’t change your life or make you more money unless you actually need it rn, you probably don’t need to learn it you don’t need another vibe coding course just to “keep up” you don’t need 20 AI tools in your workflow and you definitely don’t need your own 17-agent orchestration system because some guy on X said it runs his entire company use AI when it saves you time on boring shit that’s enough your actual edge is still your expertise, taste, network, and ability to get things done if everything worked like AI companies and headlines make it sound, half the businesses around us would already be dead you’d know instead, most AI products are still looking for PMF and some companies are already rolling back AI implementations that didn’t work saw a great analogy today: in the 90s, people knew every processor, motherboard, sound card, GPU, RAM manufacturer, hard drive a lot of people built their own computers how many people need to know any of that today? probably 0.1% AI will probably go through the same thing, just 10x faster everyone rn is learning how to build agents, connect tools, create workflows and set up their own orchestration systems in a year, a lot of that knowledge might be completely useless building computers went from useful to unnecessary for most people in 10 years building agents could do it in one so yeah you can probably just sit back and wait

Great presentation for the ages. My take aways: Don't feel wrong about putting certain things like C code in black box. Innovation now possible all the way to hardware OS. Chisel is more common word than I thought. Look at all the things we are not doing. Also super excited to see Omarchy for kids.

Gone through the entire keynote and agree with most of the points. But I think some developers are taking it the wrong way, or maybe the framing is off. “Put all the changes in PR as a black box.” But c’mon, he has 25 yrs of fucking experience. Do you really think the way he uses AI is the same way we do? Absolutely not. “Rust is a good language until you never have to look at it.” Really? Can you say that to someone who just started their software journey or a fresher? You can’t make sense of that abstraction without first understanding what’s underneath it. (Unless you’re just vibe coding.) My take: you still need to learn things, even if you’re eventually working at a much higher level of abstraction. And please, stop using AI like ChatGPT just to build the next feature.

p(bloom) > p(doom) ATMs showed up in the 1970s. everyone said 300,000 bank tellers were done. instead banks got cheaper to run, opened more branches, and teller employment doubled to 600,000. Oppenheimer told Truman he had "blood on my hands." Truman called him a crybaby. the guy who built the bomb couldn't see it would also give us nuclear power. or that the Cold War would stay cold. we are terrible at predicting the future. especially from panic. that doesn't make the risks imaginary. it should make us humble about extrapolating them. highly recommend the full talk from @dhh. “If we get the nuclear apocalypse, you should have spent your last day being a little more cheery.”

"Rust is amazing ...if you never, ever, EVER have to look at it yourself." - @dhh we started migrating some our heaviest reads from node to rust. we're see ~10x improvements on our p95's not to mention this runs on a single $30/mo server, serving 400K MAU

Its easy to say be positive about ai when you dont have to worry about if your salary slip will keep coming next month or not. Try telling that to a fresher who just came out of clg after giving 20+ years of his life to school+clg+learning code just to see it all going to shit.

This talk is great! But the comments of rails people even better. "It's the pope preaching the benefits of atheism" "This is the most confusing funeral I’ve ever experienced" "Rails tend to rust over time if not used"

Rails takes care of the busy work so you can focus on your idea. basecamp.com/gettingreal/01.…
