Good to see some fresh new ideas in British politics. This cutting benefits thing, which Im sure we’ve not tried before, is sure to solve something.
There is a risk people don't realise how much the ground has shifted among the public on need to get welfare under control. We hear it not just those 'on the right' or language of 'shirking', but those who approach from a position of wanting to help but think we're at a limit

Lmao they are literally saying "we must drill oil because the UK doesn't have enough, but it doesn't count for the environment because we're going to export it"

The stated reasoning rather undermines the idea that this will either bring the price down or contribute to energy security.

I joke but presumably the plan is not to arm the masses, but to make them wear uniform and do what they're told all day - ie incarceration, posing as aspiration

genuinely what is the plan, the opening scene of 'enemy at the gates' except the conscripts-to-rifles ratio is 50:1 rather than 2:1 and the enemy (if we ever decide who that's going to be) have weapons that can kill them all in the first five seconds anyway

You can always tell when something in Britain has been pedestrianised because the chat swaps from “if those feckless disabled scroungers can walk to the kitchen, they can get a job” to “what of the poor, ailing disabled who need to be driven directly to the shop doorstep?”
Apparently if you are a plumber or a painter you won't be able to go shopping in Oxford Street anymore.

I'm sure we'll be seeing emergency property seizures, punitive 150% high band tax rates etc etc *any day now* if our very democracy is under imminent threat

The Times and the Telegraph here continuing the now-standard tactic of explicitly targeting individual members of the public for public denunciation, a thing that I do not remember happening until the late 2010s.

Still a bit in disbelief that in the efforts to reach peak Lib Dem, they have declared to have found the first non-racist genocide

It's perfectly in order to say you think the Zionism is Racism motion was unwise, ill-timed or what you will. The trouble is that if you do not say that what's happened since is a mammoth bad-faith campaign of hysteria and intolerance, you are contributing to that campaign.

Worth adding that no one appears to think the Green's 33% vote-share heralds the inevitability of a progressive coalition.
The result is fine, I don't get the drama about this. The Greens made some mistakes in the campaign, incurred tactical voting against them after they correctly called Zionism racist etc, but if the problem now is how to turn a strong second into a first — good problem to have.

Stepping down ASAP as an MP after being hailed as a man of pure selfless dedication to duty and service is at least quite funny, I think. One last great fuck you to everyone who ever carried water for him, which is a lot of people.

I have to say: “it is the sacred duty of the British press to expose liars and bullshitters defrauding the public” is one of the best and most insulting gambits yet.

1908: the Lancet, one of the most respected scientific journals, calls for 18 age limit on reading in bed amidst a moral panic surrounding children becoming "addicted" to novels, which were "designed to keep kids hooked" and destroy their attention/mental health
