3D view of new satellite hotspots about 8 km north of Nelson, BC, from todays most recent satellite hotspot pass. It looks like two clusters, one near Mount Grohman and one across the valley to the west.

Nature really put on a show! 🌈🌋🌪️ A rainbow stretched over Hawaii's Kilauea volcano as multiple dust devils swirled near the lava during its 55th eruptive episode.
Thanks to the @openstreetmap community, FireMap now has free layers for power lines, pipelines, power stations, substations and dams to complement our global wildfire data feed. 🫡
Holding the families of those lost at CFB Wainwright close today. Gratitude to every firefighter and first responder out there.
Todays hotspot detections show the fire moved at least 5 km east-southeast. It's an incomplete picture, but it's what we have for now.
Here's a 3D overview of the terrain around the Cooley Fire with the latest satellite hotspots and perimeter. It's mapped at 731 acres in and is putting out a lot of ground-level smoke. Ground level smoke runs down the coast from just west of Santa Rosa to about Bodega Bay. Santa Rosa, Bay Area and North Bay, heads up for poor air quality near the coast.

Terra MODIS just passed over Edmonton, Alberta. With heavy cloud cover we'll see whether any new hotspots for the CFB Wainwright fire are detected.
FireMap shows these heat sensing satellites in near real time and when the next pass is due.

Not trying to speculate on a tragedy like this. But with reports of an explosion at CFB Wainwright, it's worth noting that several early satellite hotspots were within about 1 km of the munitions storage area. We'll know more when officials release details.

Very strong winds across Alberta today. Here's a look at them around Red Deer, west of Wainwright, to show how strong they are.
With winds like this, the fire may have grown a lot by the next satellite hotspot capture in about 5.5 hours.

Wildfire near Wainwright, Alberta. Preliminary hotspots are on FireMap now, with strong winds in the forecast. Data is thin until the next good satellite pass in about 8 hours, and FireMap will update as soon as it lands.
