(Inspired by @divbyzero) In an effort to get something other than politics into your feed, a fun fact about ‘49’ The sum of the digits of the square of 49 (2401) is the square root of 49 (More in the image below) Src: Issue 49 of #SixSTEMTweets newsletter Link in alt text

It’s really hard to prove that a closed loop in the plane divides that plane into two pieces.

can AI do research-level mathematics? make conjectures? prove theorems? there’s a moving frontier between what can and cannot be done with LLMs. that boundary just shifted a little. this is my experience with AI proving a new theorem. 1/

one of the most beautiful facets of geometric topology is the study of contact structures -- these are nowhere-integrable plane fields (in 3-d). unlike vector fields, plane field are rarely illustrated/animated. (cause it's hard!)

There is no "correct" solution to the Monty Hall Problem. What some people circulate as a "solution" rests on the flawed assumption that everyone prefers cars over goats.

See you soon at #MAAthFest 🎉
MathFest attendees: I had such a good time with this hat tile activity at Bridges that I'm repeating it at MathFest: Friday, Aug. 9, 9:00-12:00 in the foyer across from the registration desk. Come for a few minutes or the whole time. The more the merrier! Please retweet! @maanow

Photos don’t do justice to how stunning this looked. In person. The enthusiasm was palpable. Oh, and it’s the best place to stand in front of to take selfies with math buddies. @divbyzero
I had an amazing time at Family Day yesterday at @BridgesMathart. Chaim Goodman-Strauss, Scott Vorthmann, and I ran a hat tile build. We found out when we got there that we were not allowed to use the floor, but we improvised and were able to make a pretty big tiling anyway.

One of the few I've already read. And maybe the best math book I've read period. By Dave Richeson @divbyzero. (And was right. I didn't see half of these subjects as an undergrad math major.)

Right now, almost halfway through Quarterfinal 2 of the #BigMathOff, Angela has a ~300-vote lead over Howie. But I have seen fortunes shift quite a bit in this competition! And I want to at LEAST make this thing competitive! So I'll say it: Vote for Howie! aperiodical.com/2024/07/the-…
