Quantum computing could break the cryptographic assumptions behind blockchain signatures. But the challenge isn’t just finding stronger cryptography. It’s making the transition to it practical.
I joined the @Starknet Campaign on @KaitoAI and the technical approach is worth understanding.
First: Cryptographic agility through programmable accounts.
Conventional ECDSA signatures are typically around 64 bytes, with verification costs depending on the execution environment. Post-quantum schemes such as Falcon-512 and ML-DSA can introduce larger signatures and heavier verification workloads.
Starknet’s native account abstraction changes the upgrade equation. Accounts are smart contracts that define their own transaction-validation logic, allowing a new account implementation to adopt a different signature verifier without requiring a network-wide hard fork.
Second: STARK proofs built on hash functions.
STARK proving relies on hash-based cryptographic assumptions rather than the elliptic-curve assumptions targeted by Shor’s algorithm. This gives Starknet’s proving layer a post-quantum friendly foundation.
There’s another important advantage: STARKs can prove complex computations. That creates a way to handle computationally expensive operations, potentially including post-quantum signature verification, and verify the resulting proof without repeating the entire computation.
These two capabilities solve different problems. Programmable accounts provide flexibility to change transaction signatures; STARKs provide a way to prove computation efficiently.
That’s the deeper point: post-quantum readiness isn’t just about choosing a stronger algorithm. It’s about building an architecture that can evolve.
This does not mean every Starknet component is already quantum-resistant. Existing accounts and external dependencies still require attention and migration remains an ongoing process.
