Most of the anti-Prop 40 messaging is “billionaires are going to leave California and the economy will suffer!” which is a nerd-centric comms failure so bad it explains how that proposition hit the ballot in the first place
NO: Here is a sober analysis of second-order economic consequences. Please think of the jobs
YES: We’re going to take all of Mark Zuckerberg’s money and make him sit under the slime waterfall from Double Dare
Do not make this the argument
It’s correct (and fun!) to shit on boomers for destroying civilization. BUT they’re clueless about that because of the pace of the change in consumer technology that they lived through, which was unprecedented at the time and only seems normal to us because we grew up in it
He’s like a Chinese peasant who had Shenzhen built around him in 20 years except instead of struggling to use an escalator he has to deal with Facebook and YouTube.
Really enjoying this conversation about “striverism,” which I’m sure will chill out over the next few years as every aspect of human life is quantified, turned into a target, and financialized
"Guy who's never heard of Driveline claiming baseball teams are stupid for not outsourcing all their decisions to AI" is a pretty good illustration of why people don't trust software engineers
if i ran a major league baseball franchise i’d feed every stat imaginable into frontier ai models & basically delegate the roster construction + entire game management layer to them. no traditional manager & no gm making baseball decisions by gut ever. the manager & gm are both ai agents.
for every game every pitch would update the model including exit velocity, pitch velocity, spin, fatigue, matchups, positioning, bullpen availability / usage, etc. & it would continuously simulate thousands of scenarios & make the highest expected value decision in real time.
then over a 162 game season it watches every game afterward through precision cameras, grades every decision, learns from every outcome, & gets better.
baseball might be the perfect sport for this. it has discrete events, absurd amounts of data, repeated situations, & a gigantic sample size.
billy beane found mispriced players but this finds mispriced decisions too on every layer.
can some billionaire please buy an mlb franchise & let me run this experiment pretty please?
this would be the houston astros on steroids. imagine ai winning a ring?

AI tools are really useful! Maybe the people at the top of a complex, unfamiliar system are making rational decisions about where to use those tools! Maybe you don't need to overpromise about the tools' capabilities!
Alex Jones really missed his calling as a high school football coach. If he gave you a halftime speech you would rip the opposing QB’s heart out and eat it on the field
It's funny that in the 2000s "finance guy" was seen as the maximally amoral job. Everyone at Jane Street just likes math puzzles. Their second-choice career was “puzzle contest designer.”
The actual most amoral job is “growth PM at Cocomelon”
remembering 25 years ago today when my high school Spanish teacher turned off the classroom TV and accused us of trying to get out of our daily vocabulary quiz
Listening to 99.9% of recruiters talk about hiring is like listening to someone speak authoritatively about nutrition because they know how to chew and swallow food
People are 100% right to hate datacenters because of the small stuff. Oh you’re gonna cure cancer, huh? I get 8 spam calls every week.
The average person is in a constant, low-grade war against huge uncaring institutions with incentives that are, at best, perpendicular to their own. They understand that AI is going to make those institutions more powerful.
