ICYMI: Finally some good news! The senate committee rejected the 40% budget cut for NIH and instead endorsed a $400 million budget increase! Science for the win.

Political assassinations
Today began with the cold-blooded assassination of Minnesota Democratic lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark in their home by a coward dressed up as a police officer leaving two children without either parent. Another couple, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, are fighting for their lives. My fellow Americans, peace is our only way forward. At this moment may we pause and hold this family, their extended family, and their friends in a collective embrace. No doubt other lawmakers around our country are terrified and with good reason. Everyone is terrified. My hope is that those who protest today will do so peacefully and calmly. My hope is that we will all condemn political violence, hate speech, name calling—all of it. It has no place in our public square, no place in our culture. Condemn it in every way. My hope is that today we will all stop and realize that the tempers, the rage, the anger, the vitriol—it’s all brought us to this moment. This moment must end. This moment cannot go on. No one is safe in this moment. May we hold these families close. May we hold our own families close.

dyk the Human Genome Project cost taxpayers about $ 3 Billion over 13 years but is estimated to have a generated an ROI of $1 Trillion impacting the fields of medicine, agriculture, energy, and the environment. Science is not a cost. It’s an investment with countless returns.

Today, Trump’s unilateral 10% tariffs go into effect which will do nothing but raise costs for the American people. Here’s a statement the White House released earlier today: “The President won his second round matchup of the Senior Club Championship today in Jupiter, FL, and advances to the Championship Round tomorrow.”

NIH funding cuts could cost the U.S. $16 Billion and 68,000 jobs. An interactive tool from @joshuasweitz and team shows the local impact across the U.S. - down to the county level. This isn’t abstract - these numbers affect real communities and real lives: scienceimpacts.org

Great paper
A study of NCAA Division I football players revealed persistent atrophy in the quadriceps and gastrocnemius muscles 2 years after ACL reconstruction despite full return to play. Read the perspective from: @doclsmack healio.com/news/orthopedics/…

Omaha North’s Tyson Terry tore his ACL in October during a football game and wrestled on it the whole season to complete the first heavyweight four-peat in Nebraska high school history. Terry finished his career 169-0 and will join Nebraska football as a d-lineman next.
