As a Black female PI, I am up to three times less likely to get one or more R01 grants. That is a fact. It’s a fact when you account for score, institution, career stage, etc. There have been many studies and it’s 100% clear there is racial bias in funding.

I’m taking the summer off to rest, but in August I’ll be starting as a postdoc in @sarah_reisman’s group as both an NSF MPS-Ascend fellow and Caltech Presidential postdoctoral scholar! I’m excited to keep learning and growing as I study cross-electrophile coupling.

I brought up this point at a conference last year, and another attendee effectively called me a liar, saying that healthcare for pregnant people has not changed in Texas. I‘m still livid about that exchange.
You might think this is exaggerated, but I assure you, it is not. I almost died having a miscarriage in Texas when I was visiting home. After that, I refused to travel to certain places while pregnant.
