Today we celebrate #WorldWetlandsDay from the Dorset Frome and its floodplains.
Join us to explore the river, its braids, meanders and backwaters, ponds, scrapes and soggy margins, flood meadows and veteran trees.
This year's theme is 'wetlands and human wellbeing'.
Distant wetlands. Pyramidal Orchids in full swing on Portland for this week's celebration of #wildflowerhour from Dorset.

A stunning & deeply profound review of @KathleenJamie’s Cairn for @tweetbytheriver from @RedRiverCroft … ‘slim and light, but I stagger under its heft.’ It’s an extraordinary book in its lived arc. Deeply affecting in its ‘ordinariness’ Loved this review, & the book also …
What an honour & privilege to review 'Cairn' by Kathleen Jamie, one of Scotland's greatest living writers, for @tweetbytheriver. It's truly beautiful & thought-provoking. For me, its her best yet. Read the full review here: caughtbytheriver.net/2024/07…

There was no #pond here 20 months ago. This ancient #ghostpingo was buried beneath a pig field! Here it is now. Vibrant with rarities. The most successful form of ecological restoration imaginable!!! The work of @uclponds @hburningham @tim_holt_wilson @carlsayerUCL @NorfolkWT

Finishing the top binding to a hazel hurdle~adding in a rod to every upright secures the top and adds a nice twist appearance at the same time.
Joins in to a little cleft chestnut pale picket fence I did last week. Hard to imagine this was once a hideous line of leylandii.

Ah me. Us. What we’ve extinguished. A whole population of house martins in this village. Nest cup marks watermarked on so many of the houses still; a ghost village of thousands. Thumbprints of our guilt. Still hundreds when we came here, all gone in the last decades 1/2
And breathe in the sea air.
Celebrating the week's #wildflowerhour without a #stinkyplant in sight!!

Stands up and applauds:
Ten weeks from hatching to taking on a 10,000+km migration route, weighing 15gm. Remarkable.
"They too are migrants and further totems of our planet’s unfathomable grandeur and unity."
Wonderful writing on Pied Flycatchers by @MarkCocker2 in @GdnCountryDiary. Thank you.
