Lately I've been seeing a lot of hype around quantum computing on this platform. Are those bots or humans? Either way, what I'm seeing is concerning. I want to provide an honest perspective on the current status quo, which is hopefully useful. Long story short, I do think a lot of exciting progress on QC will be made over the next few years. But I doubt those progress will be commercial applications.

« Prenez garde, je vais parler français ».
En 1949, à Strasbourg, Winston Churchill appelait à la construction européenne. En 2016, l'ironie de l'Histoire le voyait trahi par son propre parti.
Qu'aurait-il pensé aujourd'hui de ce #BrexitDay ?

Connes embedding conjecture (a question in pure mathematics about von Neumann algebras) is equivalent to Tsirelson’s problem (a question about whether two mathematical models of quantum entanglement are equal).
OMG! If scirate.com/arxiv/2001.04383 posted to the @arxiv today by Ji, Natarajan, Vidick, Wright and Yuen checks out, it's HUGE: a quantum-complexity-theoretic refutation of the Connes embedding conjecture - one of biggest open problems in von Neumann algebras for well over 30 years.
There's a nice & more accessible (at least if you're a mathematician/quantum info theorist but not an expert in von Neumann algebras!) intro from coauthor Thomas Vidick in the Notices of the AMS: ams.org/journals/notices/201… (thanks to another coauthor @henryquantum for the link.)
And a nice blog post by Vidick telling the story of how they came to the result: mycqstate.wordpress.com/2020…
Some more detail from @henryquantum on their breakthrough result, refuting the Connes embedding conjecture using quantum complexity theory:

Sure! Since I’m the only (active) person on Twitter from our team (so far), I guess I’ll say something short :-). Basically, there is a really remarkable set of connections involved: pure math <=> foundations of quantum mechanics => complexity theory. 1/n

Conservative party donors, backing Brexit but at the same time seeking EU citizenship via Cyprus. Pardon my French but ordinary British citizens are being screwed over by their elite.

The election gives BJ the freedom to extend the transition, and to align UK & EU rules, if he wants to. He will probably do this, since leaving the transition without an FTA would be painful for the economy. He can take on ERG since he is master of his party. A thread. @CER_EU /1

1/3: To date, results in the thermo resource theory paradigm were built on precarious foundations: it was unclear whether they were implementable without changing the transition laws due to unavoidable back-action. @postquantum pointed out this problem a long time ago to me

Here is picture taken set up when he held up Brexit by voting against it
When he wanted top job, HE HELD UP BREXIT.
When he had the top job he decided "get it done" would help him keep it, even though HE STOPPED BREXIT getting done.
Boris Johnson only cares about himself
“Trust in politics has been undermined by people who held Brexit up” says Johnson.
Johnson voted against Theresa May’s Brexit deal.
Johnson called an election rather than take his own deal through Parliament.
