KAZ Minerals green-lights Baimskaya mine at an astronomic cost of $8.5bb (probably closer to $10bb after cost creep). Only 300kt of copper production and won’t start till 2028. Capital intensity of $30k+/t is now table stakes. Hard to make numbers work at $10k Cu.

Nickel sulphide and cobalt are critical inputs for the NCM battery in an electric car. But don’t forget about platinum. Japanese OEMs are betting big on hydrogen fuel cell cars (and buses and trains). Hydrogen fuel cells consume significant platinum. And platinum is scarce.
