You only have to look at the current state of our health service, to realise that modern medicine, so good at treating acute illness but without as much attention on prevention and long-term illness, is failing our patients. There is an inextricable rise in demand for medical care which is unsustainable. Unless things change, this situation will only get worse. And more and more patients will suffer. As an A&E Dr, in many ways, I provide a sticky plaster to societal problems. We need to move our mindset from treatment to prevention of illness. Only lifestyle changes can truly reduce demand and in the medium to long term preserve a healthy service for all and not just those lucky enough to afford private care. Doing regular exercise is the single most important thing that anyone can do for their health and thus reduce demand on health care systems. Two new studies have shown that even small amounts of exercise both for adults and kids can make a massive difference to both physical and mental wellbeing. In this week’s mail health article, these scientific papers are reviewed and the importance of exercise examined. In summary, get out there, walk or jog; even small amounts are so good for you - you don’t have to do a 10K or a marathon. But if you want that as a goal, as the medical director of the @BrightonMarathn I can thoroughly recommend our races!

Palliative care doctor here. I'm sickened that @SteveBarclay wants to ditch two thirds of NHS cancer targets, including the two-week-wait. I witness the horrific human cost of delayed diagnoses & avoidable deaths & I can tell you it is scandalous. (1/2) bbc.co.uk/news/health-664949…

Gutted to miss it. If ever there was a reason to embrace cultural diversity and admire the skills, care and dedication that differing backgrounds bring to provide great care it’s obvious to all who are lucky enough to work on @GHFT_DCC Thanks team.

Rishi Sunak told MPs today NHS workforce plan is fully funded. It is not. Govt has committed £2.4bn only for expansion of training places & costs for first 5 years. It doesn't cover costs over later years or the massive increase in salaries for new staff = many billions. #PMQs

Was really amazed at the time, resources and even the venue tbh. It seems very shocking itu follow up doesn’t happen everywhere. Has changed how I will practice, too.

No doubt we are at a tipping point for the future of healthcare in the U.K. You will hear a lot of misinformation, disinformation, and barefaced lies over the next 18 months - a £200bn/yr industry is on the table. So here are the facts… Has the NHS been value for money?

I’m looking forward to reading the NHS workforce plan, particularly who is going to train all the new staff? Existing students and trainees lament the lack of training. Unless we retain the trainers, and protect time for training, we can’t teach the trainees.
