Acute postoperative pain is not benign. In a recent publication in @_Anesthesiology we indicate that acute postoperative pain after a hip fracture is strongly associated with a troponin elevation, ischemic myocardial injury, and myocardial infarction
Severe pain had the strongest association with cardiac outcomes (by odds ratio) over any other predictor, including established predictors for myocardial injury (eg, age, sex, hx of MI, HTN, DM, etc).
