Feels like it’s been a while between papers.. but our latest is now out! Here we used the side-population technique to isolate term trophoblast stem cells, showing that in FGR they grow slower, die more easily, and have impaired differentiation. doi.org/10.1016/j.yexcr.2025…

This helps explain why FGR placentas are smaller & less able to transport oxygen and nutrients to the baby. Knowing this will hopefully help identify therapeutic strategies to target this upstream dysfunction, in turn improving a range of downstream consequences for the placenta.

This paper has been building for a while - started by gene expression work done by @TeenaGamage in her PhD, and then contains almost all of the PhD work of @cherrysun606 following this up in functional experiments. Amazing work by these two! 🤩 #JamesLab

Fun day at the Rosehill College Hauora expo sharing our love of all things placenta, and our work aimed at better interpreting ultrasound in pregnancy to improve detection of at risk babies. New hologram was a hit (looks better irl), and tons of kids through 😃 #teamplacenta

🚨 New study reveals that when used to summarize scientific research, generative AI is nearly five times LESS accurate than humans. Many haven't realized, but Gen AI's accuracy problem is worse than initially thought.

Super grateful for this generous philanthropic support of our work to develop sex-specific virtual placenta models, which we hope to use to develop more personalised tools to aid early identification of babies at risk of being born dangerously small. auckland.ac.nz/en/news/2025/…

Love placentas? Love all the quirky brilliant Australasian placentologists out there? Feeling a bit icky about X in the current political climate? Great news my people, you can now find @ANZPRA1 on the place the sky is blue as well 🦋 Same handle.

Anyone interested in part-time computational research? We have funds to support microscopy bioimage analysis and culture modelling, and wondering how best to use it! Reach out if you know someone. Reminder: Our lab-based PhD advert is still open to Jan 5. shorturl.at/oaBsf
