Yes, by William G. Murray. One of the best along the College Street, College Green, Dame St smorgasbord of fine, 19C bank and insurance headquarter buildings. Of course, as a friend once remarked, they were all in sort-of unspoken, architectural pissing contest with the BoI.
While most Irish people understandably don’t have much grá for banks, they at least left us with some of Dublin’s most beautiful architecture. The former Provincial Bank of Ireland with its carved Portland stone, classical columns and symbolic figures on top is a great example.

The subtle distortions in this 1652 “View of Delft” by Carel Fabritius meant it was to be seen through a lens, as part of a viewing device. The same church appears (distantly) in a 1654 view by Egbert van der Poel, of Delft after the 1654 explosion. Fabritius one of the dead

On my annual pilgrimage, to gawp at art works in the some of the great museums of the world. This time around, it’s off a very rainy London (where I used to live) And as so often happens it’s the great northern and Flemish masterpieces that seize you first.

City of Dublin Steam Packet Co postcard sent from the RMS Leinster to an address in Dublin. In October 1918 the Leinster was torpedoed by a German U-Boat a few miles off the coast of Dublin resulting in the largest single loss of life in the Irish Sea.

Beware all. This innocent looking piece, about an artist we all loved, links to something that really appears to come from the @Independent_ie . Looks exactly like an article in the Indo, the font/ typeface, layout. It is phoney, and a deeply cynical, fake investment scam

St Luke is patron saint of artists, as he was thought to have painted a portrait of the Virgin. It meant artists guilds across medieval & renaissance Europe were called the Guild of St Luke. Many works depict him painting her. The most famous are by Rogier van der Weyden.
18th October is the Feast of St Luke who is depicted here with his symbol. Cologny, Fondation Martin Bodmer, Cod. Bodmer 34; The Four Gospels in Armenian; 1606 CE; Stampoul (Istanbul), Church of Saint Nikoghayos; ff.106v-107r (e-codices.ch/en/list/one/fmb…)

ChatGPT’s ability to improve this faded old photo: Rivalled only by Sir William Orpen’s ability to upgrade Count John McCormack’s handsome but portly appearance into this figure of Edwardian elegance and rumpled, raffish charm.
Following on from my last post on Count John McCormack's portrait by Sir William Orpen, here is a photo of them standing beside the painting. I submitted it to ChatGPT with a request to 'restore photo' and here is the amazing result (3 minutes later).
