Following on from our 2023 ECCMID poster on hospital mask mandate, the peer-reviewed paper has been published. Suggests that HCW surgical mask mandate had at best a very limited effect in protecting patients after 2021 journalofhospitalinfection.c… 📷

...but one question is how easy/affordable to apply in practice: they had dedicated research scientists manning the analysers in the AMU/ASU
We actually did this paper in our journal club this morning. A good paper, showed that quick negative PCR results from a NPT enabled patients to be moved out of isolation; also showed value of rectal swab (compared well to faeces, but reduces delays in sample collection)...

#stevebarclay #JuniorDoctorsStrike Eventually (probably) there will be talks and an agreement. We should take a lesson from the Vatican: the leaders on both sides to be locked into a building, fed coffee and doughnuts, and only released after the white smoke is seen.

latimes.com/science/story/20… Our study on the HCW mask mandate has generated some interest, but important not to overstate conclusions. We found that removing the HCW mask mandate in our hospital did not lead to a rise in the risk of nosocomial COVID, in a highly immune population.

Interesting @easyJet experience now: 6 hours waiting in a plane in Krakow airport, then flight cancelled, another 90 minutes to be allowed to disembark, 100+ passengers wandering around an otherwise deserted airport trying to find out where their promised hotel room is....

I am so bored of the Harry and Meghan shenanigans. In happier times Harry would have raised an army against the King, with William meeting him somewhere in Leicestershire where Harry would have died in battle, his body never found, and Meghan would have ended up in a convent.

Thanks Damien, and @jonottter for pulling it together. We wanted to demonstrate the current level of harm with Omicron in hospitals, so as to help inform appropriate risk-balanced control measures.

I've no problem with limited prescribing powers being granted to other professionals, but it is depressing when the response to inadequate access to healthcare is never "train more doctors and nurses", but rather "let more people do their job".
Replying to @drphiliplee1
Are you against pharmacists prescribing antibiotics for well described syndromes? Christ, you can get the morning after pill OTC. They're antibiotics. Not magic beans. (COI: I'm an infectious diseases consultant)

Tone-deaf #Ryanair Comms regarding a 3-hour flight delay @askryanair. Imagine they worked in healthcare: "We are pleased to inform you that the wee tumour we mentioned has now spread to your lungs', and your esteemed survival time is now until November 2022".

I guess everyone did their best during the Pandemic, but I always thought that some important ethical issues were overlooked. This is an interesting open-access paper on the topic.
📰Problematic covid19 policies No benefit: - outdoor restrictions - cloth masks - entry & exit screening - plastic screens Excessive harms: - school closures - border closures - hospital visiting policies - hard lockdowns - ostracism of unvaccinated link.springer.com/article/10…
