I am speechless. Thomas Aquinas College just dropped a study on the rigor of the new SAT. It compares the 1980/87 test with 2026. The findings should terrify every parent and teacher... Vocabulary has collapsed. Old SAT: 70.6% of questions tested vocab. New SAT: 15%. The old test forced students to know a wide range of words through analogies, antonyms, and sentence completions. The new test abandoned that. Most vocab questions now just ask students to fill in one blank from context. Reading passages also got radically shorter (average ~97 words vs 300–340). The new test uses short expository passages and hands you the necessary background knowledge inside the text. The older tests leaned much more heavily on argumentative and persuasive writing, assumed far more historical, scientific, and cultural knowledge, and penalized students who lacked it. This is a redefinition of what "college readiness" means. If you believe that kids should develop rigorous vocabulary, be capable of sustained reading, and possess background knowledge, I have bad news for you. The SAT no longer measures these. If you want a future where children can actually read difficult texts and construct complex arguments, the SAT must be replaced now. This cannot go on.
We were concerned that the SAT has become a less reliable measure of student preparedness for a rigorous college curriculum. So, we commissioned a study from Johns Hopkins University. What does this study tell us about the state of higher education? The results are shocking. thaq.co/4iLThZ0

The FBS Oversight Committee says in a statement that "instant replay protocols were not followed in the contest’s second-to-last play" in the Western Michigan-Michigan game, and "had the protocols been followed, the outcome of the game would have been different." FBS oversight committee says it cannot overturn the result.
NEW: The Big Ten has released a statement on the controversial Michigan walk-off Hail Mary against Western Michigan: “Following video review, it was determined Western Michigan’s #18 started his jump from an established out-of-bounds position (left foot) and made contact with the ball with one second remaining on the clock. As shown in the provided video of what was viewed during the replay process, a side-by-side view of the play and the game clock, using a direct shot of the game clock in the stadium, was used to determine the final ruling. Eighty-five minutes prior to the game, all broadcast cameras used for the replay system, including the camera on the game clock, are synced using a strobe system to ensure all cameras are aligned. Per NCAA Football rule 4-2-3-a, “A ball not in player control, other than a kick that scores a field goal, is out of bounds when it touches the ground, a player, a game official or anything else that is out-of-bound, or that is on or outside a boundary line.” and thus the clock is stopped.” (via @bigten) on3.com/news/big-ten-address…

"Let's talk about the NCAA saying that they can't change the outcome of the game. Everything's impossible until somebody does it." - Western Michigan president Russ Kavalhuna cbssports.com/college-footba…
Publicly, Western Michigan has been calm since Michigan. Acceptance. Growth. But the Broncos have not been quiet behind closed doors. "Western Michigan University won that football game," WMU president Russ Kavalhuna tells @CBSSports. Story: cbssports.com/college-footba…

CBS News Radio is shutting down tonight after nearly a century on the air. The storied service started in 1927 and gave rise to such icons as Douglas Edwards, Walter Cronkite and Edward R. Murrow. Together, they and their colleagues brought history into our homes: From the liberation of Nazi camps in Germany, to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, to the deadliest attack on American soil, 9/11. The company announced the closure in March, blaming what it called "challenging economic realities." To borrow Mr. Murrow's famous phrase, we wish everyone at CBS News Radio one final "Good night, and good luck."

Wharton researchers gave nearly 1,000 high school math students access to ChatGPT during practice problems Result: chatGPT is the perfect trap. Look at the red bars. Students with ChatGPT crushed their practice sessions. The basic ChatGPT group solved more problems and those on the "tutor" version did even more. Now look at the gray bars. That's the exam. No AI allowed. The ChatGPT group scored 17% worse than kids who practiced with zero technology. And the fancy tutor version? No better than working alone. The researchers called AI a "crutch." When they analyzed what students actually typed into ChatGPT, most of them just wrote - “What’s the answer?” The kicker: students who used ChatGPT believed it hadn't hurt their learning. They were confidently wrong. This is the AI trap in education. Outsourcing your thinking. Of course, lots of half-baked AI literacy curricula being rolled out in schools now Let’s of course ignore that basic literacy (the ability to read) is possible for <50% of 8th graders Source: Bastani et al. A 26-year-old student sent a message to his teacher to explain that he will be absent from the class because he has not found anyone to take care of his five-month-old daughter... Nathan Alexander, 34, a math professor at Morehouse College (Atlanta) responded to his student by saying: "If that's the problem, take her to class." Upon arriving in the classroom, the teacher offered to take the child so that his student could devote himself entirely to the course. The teacher held the child throughout the lesson and even after, when he answered the students questions. This photo is of the teacher who not only teaches math but also exemplifies compassion, kindness and generosity towards others. Source: The Washington Post
