We are opening a consultation on the inclusion of ACM publications within AI licensing agreements for access and training purposes. To set out our thinking behind this consultation, we have published this piece by Scott Delman as to why we believe it is now the right time for us to enter into these discussions.

In short,
- We feel that responsible inclusion of ACM Publications into AI systems will positively impact global access to scientific research and better influence future work. The balance of protecting the integrity of the Digital Library vs the risk of continuing to be excluded from new ways that researchers discover information is a delicate one which requires careful consideration.🌍️
- We are aware of concerns around key issues such as attribution, hallucinations, and the uneven economic landscape among commercial AI providers. Therefore, we will evaluate both opportunities and risks very carefully before coming to a decision. ✒️
- Revenue is not, nor should it ever be, a primary driver for ACM reaching licensing agreements with AI providers. However, if additional revenue is generated it will be used as additional support for all the meaningful work that ACM does. 🔬
If you would like to share your thoughts, please use this link (buff.ly/fnANR1x). ACM leadership will take your feedback into account while we develop and implement our AI content strategy over the coming months.

New essay - Where #OpenEducation Meets #GenerativeAI: OELMs.
"Over the next several years course materials will likely shift from formats that look more like traditional textbooks toward formats that look more like large language models (LLMs) and other generative AI tools. The shift to these tools, which comes with the risks like those described above, threatens to erode important progress toward affordability, access, and equity made by the open education movement. Understanding that LLMs are course materials can help us think more clearly about what the future of course materials might look like and how and why open continues to be important going forward."

Call for Papers: Online and Blended Learning in the Age of Generative AI
Aras Bozkurt, Anadolu University, Türkiye
Haesol Bae, University at Albany, State University of New York, USA
The advent of generative artificial intelligence (AI) has ignited considerable excitement, largely attributed to its ability to generate original content through natural language processing (NLP) and comprehensive language models (LLM). The main reason for this excitement is the potential of generative AI to comprehend and produce human language in a similar manner to a human being, considered one of the most intricate and advanced systems in existence (Bozkurt, 2023). Given this, we cannot ignore, resist, or deny the continuous influence of generative AI technologies. The capacity of these generative AI agents to employ human language for communication, interaction, and crafting human-like responses suggests a potential shift in the prevailing educational paradigm.
Given the implications of AI for education, the Online Learning Journal, OLC’s flagship academic publication, is seeking papers on generative AI. We will consider both theoretical and empirical contributions, provided they exhibit rigorous research, critical thinking, and innovative insights. Extended abstracts are due November 17, 2023 and the full call for submissions can be found on the OLJ website here. 👇
