🏀Feedback on the Tracy McGrady vs. Kobe Bryant discourse: First and foremost, Kobe is a much greater winner and competitor than McGrady. Nobody is disputing that. But there are some facts worth remembering: 1) To those making fun of McGrady’s Magic playoff record of never making it out of the first round: Please remember that whenever Kobe had a similar supporting cast, he missed the playoffs twice (more times than McGrady ever did with the Magic) and blew a 3–1 lead the other time. 2) To those bringing up McGrady’s shortcomings and playoff defeats with Yao: Nobody, including McGrady himself, ever thought that Rockets McGrady was ever as good as prime Kobe. Imagine 03 T-Mac with Yao. 3) Durant and Wade never won a playoff series without Westbrook, Curry, Shaq, and LeBron, respectively. MVP Durant lost to the Grizzlies 4–1. McGrady took the 03 Pistons, arguably the greatest defensive team of the modern NBA era, to seven games. MVP-level Wade was getting knocked out in the first round by the Ben Gordon-led Bulls and Josh Smith-led Hawks. 4) Hence, I think it is reasonable to argue that T-Mac could have won up to three championships with Shaq. Maybe not a three-peat, as he wasn't as mentally resilient as Kobe, but I don't think he would have caused a ruckus and potentially missed out on the 2004 championship with Malone and Payton. Similarly, based on both the eye test and the data above, I don't think Kobe would have done better, and, in fact, most probably would have done worse than T-Mac did with the Magic from 2001–2004. Remember, nobody is making the argument that T-Mac was always better than Kobe, nor are they arguing that he was better than Kobe throughout their extended primes. The argument is solely about their absolute peaks. And remember, the credence for such an argument was initiated by Kobe himself, when he repeatedly asserted that T-Mac was his toughest opponent and could do everything he could do, but was taller. My opinion: From 2001–2005, as a basketball player, T-Mac was a 9.8/10, while Kobe was a 9.7/10. – at Beserah, Pahang
