50 years on from the start of the summer of 1976 heatwave exactly to the day and as expect there was a Red Extreme Heat warning.
Coincidence? No. Why? We are doing the same things, with greater intensity producing greater toxicity than we were back then. If we continue unabated, the 2056 forecast by the UK Met Office will likely become our decimating reality. One of blistering summers, freezing winters, drought, flood, food and energy shortage.
Spoiler alert. Waiting for legislation or for the UK to run on renewables is simply wasting time. Action is needed now.
How will replacing your plastic bins and liners with sustainable alternatives help? It will help UK households and SME's stop discarding 100,000 tonnes of plastic annually (about 10% of unrecycled plastic waste), embodying approximately 300 million litres of oil, generating 1 million tonnes of co2 + petrochemical toxins. Changing should also inspire the choice of organic packaging generally, leading to greater savings and a significant reduction in UK households consumption of 2 million+ tonnes of plastic packaging embodying some 7 billion litres of oil, generating 26 million tonnes of co2 + petrochemical toxins.
As individuals, and as companies (except generators) we have 4 areas of focus to avoid a catastrophic near term future.
✅ Choose organic materials whenever possible
✅ Increase your plant based diet
✅ Decrease your consumption
✅ Switch to least polluting alternatives, i.e. Banks and energy providers
This is not an either or list of alternatives. This is a list of what we must all do right now if we are to attempt to hand the planet over to our next generation in something like the condition that it was entrusted to us.
Nearly two decades ago, the visionary CEO of a leading blue-chip company foresaw the impact of a global financial collapse, emblazoning the cover of the company's half-year results with an image of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Incomprehensible corporate reluctance to change led to failure and the ignominious disappearance of a century-old brand.
Today, many scientific visionaries are painting an apocalyptic picture of our future. Society broadly acknowledges the need for change, yet remains largely unwilling to disrupt the status quo.
Climate change and its consequences will not wait for the vagaries of government to become effective. Meaningful change requires immediate action from businesses and individuals alike.
Replacing Petroplastics with degradable materials, increasing plant-based diets, reducing unnecessary consumption, and choosing the least environmentally impactful options, both personally and corporately, are practical steps to build a more resilient and sustainable economy.
Just like that CEO, we have a choice: maintain the status quo and hope someone else solves the problem, or act now and encourage others to do the same, creating a more sustainable pathway for future generations.
Real change starts with the choices we make every day.

The environment is advocating change to a bio based economy, but it is up to us whether or not we listen. If you are, visit @echologika to make more of a difference.
If it looks right, it generally is right. There's little doubting the correlation of plastics and climate change. There's little doubting the significance of a bioeconomy in pursuit of rebalancing consumption and the environment. There's little doubting that we all, every individual, every company, every institution need to do everything possible to replace every piece of unnecessary plastic now. You can do just one more thing at Echologika, virtually without even having to stop what you are doing. 30 seconds to make an enduring impact which doesn't sound too much of an ask.

The current intersection of rapidly increasing environmental change and fragile global economies seems to signal the start of the end of days for society as we know it.
Growth through doing more of the post WWII same is unsustainable in every respect even with the intervention of AI and greater renewables capacity.
Is the only sustainable way forward a transition to a bioeconomy underpinned by renewable energy and renewed distribution, and if so, shouldn't the great replacement attract greater emphasis as it did out of necessity following WWII?
Who is going to pay for the great replacement? Government issued perpetual bonds funded by homeland institutional investment and pension funds repaid by a reinvigorated society flourishing through new energy, agriculture, manufacturing, construction and service sectors using homeland resource whenever possible to mitigate outflows and increase domestic productivity. Who/what is going to fund the gap? A sovereign wealth fund seeded through savings in the public purse.
I’m not an economist but I believe that if we want to restore hope, ambition and wealth, our energies need to be channelled in a sustainable direction not reliant on practices and products developed in the 1950’s but firmly rooted in the 21st century!
Habitual change for planetary good at scale, needs overused BANNERS and SUPERLATIVES to be ditched in favour of COMMON SENSE, particularly given;
· Net Zero; Unachievable
· Circularity; Unachievable
· Carbon neutrality; Unachievable
· Environmentalism; Invokes thoughts of angry activism
Getting as close as possible to sustainable objectives requires habitual change. What is likely to promote societal change…A bunch of overused banners which immediately make the intended audience groan or simple common-sense messaging?
BBC article concludes that incinerating plastic laden rubbish is as polluting as burning coal. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp3w…
Replacing Petroplastic packaging with sustainable alternatives would immediately reduce the toxicity of emissions whilst increasing energy opportunity from AD.

A consumer drive to sustainable packaging coupled with an anaerobic digestion energy recovery strategy could significantly reduce consumption of finite resources, environmental and societal impacts. Dive into the source data and numbers 1drv.ms/x/c/461ecf033dd22584…
These approximate reductions and health improvements can be achieved right now by changing to sustainable packaging and using pulp material from energy efficient sources. What’s there to think about. Dive into the source data and numbers 1drv.ms/x/c/461ecf033dd22584…
Profiling the impact of packaging on a global scale can only ever be an approximation, nonetheless the unsustainability of current methods and societal health impacts are clear and the need to change evident. Dive into the source data and numbers 1drv.ms/x/c/461ecf033dd22584…
If you were wondering what replacing plastic with sustainable materials looks like IRL, then wonder no more.
If you were wondering how waste incineration and landfilling could be significantly reduced, wonder no more.
If you were wondering how much energy is committed to everyday domestic disposable stuff and how that could be improved, wonder no more.
