What do you mean by knowing something theoretically? A trained Dr doesn't need to experience pregnancy to know the challenges pregnant women face. No trained Dr knows pregnancy in theory. Otherwise they shouldn't be entrusted with managing Obs patients.
That's because there's a difference between knowing something theoretically and then experiencing it. Female doctors who have experienced pregnancy and childbirth would be more sympathetic towards other women because apart from knowing the theory, they have EXPERIENCED it too.

A male Consultant Obs has far more Obs experience than any female who's not at his level. A male SR alone has managed more than 2000 Obs cases directly or indirectly. A pregnant woman knows of her experience, a consultant knows the experience of thousands of women.

I don't need to have experienced schizophrenia to be in a position to manage it as a Dr nor do I have to be a dog before I can manage dog illnesses as a vet physician.

You are not a safe doctor or nurse if you agree that Pregnancy is a death sentence. Period ….

pregnancy comes with its own risks. Some may be very high risks. Is it a death sentence?... We will continue to feed the public with crisp, triple filtered information. WATCH, SHARE, REPOST. This is very interesting.

Why should humans treat dogs as vet Drs? Have a vet Dr ever become a dog before? Why should a psychiatrist treat a schizophrenic patient? Have the psychiatrist ever been mad before?
As a medical professional, concluding pregnancy isn’t a death sentence is dangerous. Closing your mind to the raw risks women face makes it look like you’d easily dismiss a patient’s unique complaints. And you’re a man who has never experienced pregnancy before. 🤦🏽‍♀️

Broooo! Shame wear me shokoto o... A doctor who will validate, "pregnancy is a death sentence" can't pass obsgyn. A professor of Obstetrics will rather resign than pass you for that statement. That's a veto fail.
Now that the dust has settled, if you're a health worker and you supported the notion that pregnancy is a death sentence instead of debunking the falsehood, shame on you! P.S.: those of you on the blocking spree, do well to inform us so we can return the favor asap. Thanks

Nobody is dismissing lived experience. What I won't do to my patient is to validate wrong stuff. If I do so I have failed them.
Replying to @Lumideee_
In a bid to be medically right, people are dismissing lived experience + high mortality rate & epidemiological burden in Nigeria. They lack emotional intelligence & would rather tell a man who just lost his wife in labor or a woman complications that it’s not a death sentence.

As a doctor, if you say you "Pregnancy is a death sentence" or "Pregnancy feels like a death sentence" Can you defend this in any board exam or workplace-based assessment?

Once a patient flips their phone to record me, that is the end of the conversation o
They have a right to record their consultation.

Sad seeing colleagues go political with basic questions. Let me be very clear. Pregnancy is normal physiology. It's not a death sentence. Are there risks? Yes. That's why we have antenatal clinics to spot and address them before it becomes life threatening.

Hi @DONJAZZY, you've helped so many young Nigerians achieve their dreams, and I'm hoping this reaches you. I'm a Nigerian doctor months from finishing my MPH at NYU. I'm crowdfunding my tuition, and without $25K by Dec 14, I risk being disenrolled and losing my visa status.
Hi everyone, I’m Marvellous, some of you know me as Ini. I’m a few months from finishing my MPH at NYU. I planned for this year with a student loan and a summer internship but it didn’t come through. Then this month, MPOWER shut down. I was on their waitlist. #FundDrMarvellous

Pregnancy is not a death sentence no matter how any patient feels. ANCs exists to address the significant risks pregnancies pose. Everything we do comes with risksz do we then conclude that they're all death sentences? We should do better.
I’ve tried to avoid this topic but here’s my take. I understand the intention behind saying pregnancy is not a death sentence, but I find that statement kind of insensitive. Pregnancy may not be a death sentence for most women, but it can absolutely be for some. Women actually die from pregnancy related complications…some barely survive it. Some sustain life-altering complications. I think we should be careful not to invalidate these experiences in an attempt to make pregnancy sound less scary.

My chief, pregnancy is not a death sentence. It's physiology. Are there risks? Yes. That's why ANC exists in the first place. Most mortalities are avoidable via ANC. Are there misses and near misses? Yes. Does it make it a death sentence? Not true.
I was a Doctor for years before my first pregnancy. I had the theoretical knowledge. I had walked people through the path, done ceaserian sections, delivered vaginally assisted and none assisted, but NOTHING prepared me for My Pregnancy journey. At a point, even though I consider myself a relatively nice doctor, I had to start apologizing to all the patients I had come across… I realized knowing something and experiencing something are just 2 absolutely different things… I used to defend that Mummy Zee lady on this app before the Pregnancy shii bluff…I used to think she was targeted but I realized she’s actually not a kind person… the way she was doubling down in the comment section before she deleted the whole insensitive post… That shii hit a nerve in me…for the pregnant women that was brought in dead due to eclampsia, for the one we lost on the operating table and we all shed hot tears, for the ones that had to deal with post partum complications for the rest of the their lives…for myself and my pregnancy journey; the one that stayed and the one that messed me up so bad and still left…
