What do you know about the productivity and harvest of wild waterfowl? The biology of it is in some ways poorly known in Europe - but we can look at the USA first to see what they have found #ducks #conservation #utilitarian #thread (Credit: I.Acarpentier) /1

🍣 🇮🇸 This is an indoor salmon farm in Iceland. A tank the size of x1.5 Olympic swimming pool.
It contains 60,000 adult salmon.
Indoor salmon farming is championed as the future. Better for fish & the environment.
I investigated these claims for Sunday Times Magazine…🧵1/6

Which bird disperses which plant? What does bird dispersed fruit look like? Why do fruit sizes differ between regions? Why does ivy fruit in winter? How can we identify the disperser and distance carried from droppings? How did this collaboration arise? youtu.be/4vZ0w97ffRM?si=EzeR…

Sure we need housing, and for sure sometimes we make too much of protecting wheat fields....but this feels a bit icky

This is a handful of the most interesting facts from the latest episode of the podcast about the impacts of beavers on salmonids, featuring Dr. Rob Needham's groundbreaking research on fish passage through beaver dams.
1/10

ALT A beaver dam constructed from intricately woven sticks and branches spans across a small stream in a lush woodland setting. The dam creates a small pond on one side whilst allowing water to flow through on the other. Tall grasses and sedges grow around the water's edge, with dense green vegetation and trees creating a natural canopy overhead. The engineering shows the characteristic beaver construction technique of tightly packed timber creating an effective water barrier.

Some spin from @fieldsportstv - shame given the broad collaborative authorship - note the key take home is the knowledge gaps (i.e. corvids likely an effect on hedgerow species, largely missing from the data set) - if anyone wants a chat with no spin - speak to @PaulDolman3
Sheep and deer kill more groundnesting chicks than magpies and grey squirrels.
That’s the conclusion of research by the British Trust for Ornithology.

How robust is current hunting bag data, and can we rely on it to manage sustainable harvest of UK waterbirds?
