NEW: Pope Leo XIV turned his own cancer into a case for universal health care on Friday, telling Uruguay’s president that care must reach everyone “regardless of their resources.”
“Recently I experienced firsthand the limitations imposed by illness and I received care for which I am deeply grateful,” the pope said.
That care, he said, made him think of the “many men and women who lack the means to obtain a timely diagnosis.”
With his vote in Tuesday’s U.S. midterm elections, Leo XIV became the first known pope in the Church’s 2,000-year history to vote in a democratic election.
