“The possibility of suffering being redeemed by art, being made meaningful and thus real … is still vital to me. Art reminds us of the uniqueness, particularity, and intrinsic value of things, including ourselves.” —Reginald Shepherd, “Why I Write”

Thursday, we celebrated the final session of our seminar “James Baldwin’s America” for the semester. We took this photograph after having our final discussion on Baldwin’s The Evidence of Things Not Seen & reflecting on the semester together. One student propped up her water /1🧵

These arrests are antithetical to the mission of higher ed. Our institutions exist to foster robust exchanges of ideas & open dialogue in service of knowledge & understanding. Sometimes that includes open dissent. Peaceful campus protests should never be met w/ violence.
