TFW you find yourself at a deliciously leisurely Sunday lunch eating cheese and biscuits on a plate from the 1950s Ambridge tea service.
Obviously I shall be featuring this in an article in the Borchester Echo.
All best,

On #worldoperaday2026 give yourself a treat and succumb to Handelβs astonishingly tender and impassioned mother-and-son duet from Giulio Cesare sung with quite extraordinary dramatic intent by @bethtaylormezzo & @SvetlinaSt.

We all know Jacques Demyβs sensational Les Parapluies de Cherbourg and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort but hands up who knew of Donovan, Jack Wild, Diana Dors and John Hurt in this from 1972? Not me. I suspect itβs unmissably dated.

Thoughts and prayers with the New Statesman. There has clearly been a horrible accident at their offices, where everyone involved in the magazine has sustained severe brain damage.
The replies are funny though.
Owen Jones has, for the last three years, revealed himself to be a man of enormous courage, integrity and truthfulness. No one should think for a minute that his relentless defence of Palestinian rights and historical truth is easy or comes without heavy personal costs. Throughout the genocide in Gaza, Jones remained a tireless bur rigorous and supremely decent voice. I suspect part of what initially moved him was the strong displeasure in being treated like an idiot by the official propaganda β a noble motive in itself β but there is no question he has been genuinely touched by the images of suffering arriving daily from Gaza. And yet, how does his intellectual fixation on a battle between left and right help us understand the horrors of Gaza, or move us to stop them? My impression is that the opposite has happened. People look at what is happening in Gaza and ask themselves what a person on the right or on the left should think. In many cases this is ideology. In most, simply careerism and group association. Jones shows how limited the perspective really is. How about, like the author himself, asking how a human being should feel? How about returning to the world of facts and feelings rather than our endless Marvel franchise? newstatesman.com/culture/booβ¦

What, some people wonder, is the definition of camp? May I present a contender: Shirley Bassey singing Sondheim⦠on an oil rig. Yes.

Bad news: the BBC is set to scrap Radio 4 Extra. π» Losing this treasure trove of classic comedy, archive drama, and timeless storytelling would be a huge blow for millions of us.

Birthday boy Malcolm Arnold wrote 130+ film scores and tons of orchestral music including 9 symphonies, the best of which is 5. I was at this @bbcproms performance and, at the end, conductor Sakari Oramo brandished the score at us in delight. A marvel! youtu.be/jHidl3IXo-o?is=I8lLβ¦
For no good reason, Iβve sudden conceived a passion to re-watch a St. Trinians film. Many pluses: Ronald Searleβs credits, Malcolm Arnold marvellously jocular score among them. I remember my brother Robin and I giggling helplessly at Dora Bryan. Might I be hideously disappointed?
