Dual enrollment reached a record 3.1 million students during the 2024–25 academic year; up 10% in one year and 24% in two years.
Between 2022-23 and 2024-25:
- Total U.S. undergraduate enrollment grew by 1.6 million students.
- Dual enrollment grew by 600,000 students.
That means high school students generated 37% of all undergraduate headcount growth. At community colleges, their contribution was even larger: 42% of enrollment growth. In Missouri, Montana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wyoming, dual enrollment accounted for all net undergraduate growth. Without it, enrollment would have declined.
Is this a band-aid solution to the pending demographic winter in higher education?
