When your trunk needs a little extra help, sometimes you have to put your best foot forward! At the tail end of the dry season in the Mara, grasses become dry, tough and much harder to pull from the ground than they are during the rainy season, when fresh, green growth is plentiful. This young bull has found a clever way to tackle the challenge, using his foot to help loosen stubborn grasses while his trunk does the pulling. An elephant’s trunk is an incredible tool for feeding, but it doesn’t always work alone. By combining the strength of his trunk with the power of his legs, this juvenile male can get to the grasses he needs to keep himself nourished, even when the dry conditions make feeding a little more difficult. If elephants could talk, we think this bull would agree that the rains can’t come soon enough!

Have you ever wondered what it takes to become a ranger protecting Kenya’s wildlife and forests? It starts with a rigorous evaluation process that puts candidates’ strength, endurance and determination to the test. Mara Elephant Project recently brought together 62 candidates—54 men and 8 women—from nine different communities bordering the Mau Forest for Phase One of recruitment for a new ranger team. Through a series of physical challenges, participants demonstrated their strength, endurance and mental resilience. We extend our appreciation to @KWSKenya and @KeForestService (KFS), whose rangers supported the recruitment process. Their participation highlights the importance of collaboration in strengthening conservation efforts. With Phase One complete, the recruitment now moves into the interview stage, followed by training for those selected. We’re excited to introduce you to our new ranger team once they complete their training. Stay tuned to follow their journey!

Such joy!!! 😍😍🐘🐘❤️❤️
A rare discovery in the Mara! 🐘🐘 On this very special, and very adorable, episode of #MEPMissionMinute, we’re celebrating an extraordinary sighting in the Mara Triangle: twin elephant calves near Mara Serena! The calves, estimated to be just two to three weeks old, belong to Individual 1356, a mother last recorded by Mara Elephant Project’s long-term monitoring team in January. This set of elephant twins is rare indeed. Monitoring is the first step in the MEP Method because effective conservation starts with understanding elephants and the landscapes they depend on. By tracking individual elephants, recording family groups and documenting them over time, MEP’s research team gathers the vital information needed to evaluate trends, identify potential threats and build a clearer picture of elephant lives across the ecosystem. Every sighting adds to our understanding and helps guide conservation efforts. And this one is twice as special!

🐆 INTERNATIONAL SNOW LEOPARD DAY | 23 OCTOBER 2026 SNOW LEOPARDS are the mysterious ghosts of the mountains. Today, they face a growing fight for survival against illegal wildlife trafficking, retaliatory killings, habitat destruction, declining prey and climate change. Snow leopard bones, skins, teeth and claws have been exploited for commercial purposes. No threatened wild animal should be reduced to a commodity. As the World Health Organization (@WHO) continues its work on international health standards, we call for global leadership that protects biodiversity and ensures that health-related practices such as Traditional Chinese Medicine never contribute to the exploitation of endangered wildlife. Conservation of wildlife must come before commerce. No tradition, market or demand should cost a snow leopard its life. This International Snow Leopard Day must - * Stand for stronger wildlife protection. * Demand tougher action against traffickers. * Insure a future where these extraordinary cats can survive in the wild. Protect the snow leopard. #GMFER #MarchAgainstExtinction #InternationalSnowLeopardDay #EndWildlifeTrafficking

There’s a reason elephants are the world’s largest land mammals! A young bull grazes in the golden morning light of Samburu National Reserve. With an appetite to match its size, an elephant can spend up to 18 hours a day feeding, eating over 150 kg of food. 🎥 Tanya Onserio

Identifying every single elephant in the Mara is an elephant-sized task. Mara Elephant Project’s long-term monitoring (LTM) team is on a mission to identify and monitor every individual elephant in the Mara. If that sounds like a big task, that’s because it is! Each day, the team searches for elephants they haven’t encountered before, like this adorable little calf, while also checking in on familiar faces. During this sighting, they identified two elephants already in our database: Individuals 43 and 49. Getting to know individual elephants helps us track their movements, monitor changes in family groups and understand how the population changes over time. This long-term data is essential for identifying emerging threats and making informed decisions to protect elephants across the ecosystem. Every elephant has a story, and our LTM team is working to make sure each one is known.

RIP Kawanthissa. "Sri Lanka’s tallest living tusker, 'Kawanthissa', has died while receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at a paddy field in Galgamuwa." #Kawanthissa #SriLanka @anuradisanayake Will the SOB who shot this majestic animal ever be brought to justice? Probably not. More here: adaderana.lk/news/250076 © images: web based (creative commons)

A way out, guided from above. Nine elephants, including several young calves, were trapped in a fenced area and needed a safe way out. Mara Elephant Project’s ‘Delta’ ranger team used a thermal drone to track the herd’s movements in the darkness, guiding them through a gate and out of the fenced land. This helped reduce the risk of property damage and injury to the elephants; just one example of how technology can strengthen ranger expertise and support safer human-elephant coexistence.

Fred is a symbol of all that is good. May he continue to bring joy to all who have the privilege to work and see him in the Mara. I have #Fond memories of #Fred ❤️
Fred is many things. A magnificent bull. A symbol of the Mara. A source of inspiration. Mara Elephant Project’s unofficial mascot and a reminder of why we do what we do. To each of us, he means something a little different. What does Fred mean to you? ❤️ 🎥: Terry Pickard #FridaysWithFred
