I had an amazing time at the Emergent Generation Summer Gathering in the UK, which took place in September. Over 80 young people gathered to learn about regenerative agriculture. It was a two-day camp, with the third day dedicated to a music festival. We had several speakers and workshops throughout the event. The gathering started off strong with a keynote speech by Sue Pritchard, Chief Executive of the Food, Farming and Countryside Commission. I especially loved Sue’s final words: Purpose – Do what you love Connection – Connect with your people and place Passion – Put your whole heart into what you do I also had the opportunity to meet with producer Claire Mackenzie to discuss the process of making and advertising films, and I’m excited about the possibilities of working together on some future projects soon. There were several workshops, but I attended "Navigate Life & Business with Purpose" with Stephanie Lykourgou. She introduced us to some neuroscience concepts, explaining how our brains experience memory and imagination in similar ways, and taught us somatic techniques to calm our nervous systems. She emphasized that we cannot do it all alone and that communities exist so we can collectively meet each other’s needs. Finding our purpose, she said, comes down to the question: "Knowing there is no single course of action, what feels like it’s yours to do?" I also enjoyed Navaratnam Partheeban OBE session on diversifying networks. Theeb explained diversity in simple terms: "Diversity is what we want, we achieve it through inclusion, and sustain it through equity." We brainstormed barriers to diversity and identified how learning and connection can help break these barriers. Knowledge is the antidote to generalization, prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination. Lucy Harding from the Real Farming Trust led a workshop on Communication and Advocacy, where we learned how to develop a successful communication strategy for impactful storytelling. She introduced the concept of the "GAME plan": goals, audience, messages, and engagement. She highlighted that while social media is important, it's not the only medium; photography, television, magazines, advertisements, podcasts, and radio are all powerful ways to share messages. Using the strategies Lucy taught, I’m excited to launch some advocacy campaigns soon and am already looking forward to the Oxford Real Farming Conference in 2025. The event concluded at Sandy Hill Farm, owned by Matt and Laura. I must confess i loved the bed tents and the peaceful serenity of the farm environment it was beautiful to see 80 young people camping happily on a farm for a few days. A huge thank you to Emergent Generation and Becky Grove for putting this event together. If you or any organization you know would like to support young people in the regenerative agriculture space, please consider working with Emergent Generation. You can watch the highlights of the event in the video below. #regenerativeagriculture #agroecology

We value #intergenerational knowledge & skill sharing. If you are 35+, there is still room to get involved. You might be able to offer career advice, host talks or even mentor one of our younger members. We want to enable knowledge exchange across generations and share ideas!
