my recent AATS Presidential Address. This was a difficult address to give. I don't like to talk about personal experiences and prefer to talk about surgery. Nevertheless, I am very glad I did it, and I hope it will serve younger surgeons well.

This team is truly special! Proud to be working with them
#NYPMorganStanley has one of the largest & most successful pediatric heart transplant programs in the world. Today, surgical teams at #NYP/@ColumbiaMed perform about 25 pediatric heart transplants per year, typically more than any other hospital in the US. bit.ly/3xUSqRt

So glad Rob invited me to do this podcast with him! The topic is crucially important for the CHD community and our patients. Imperfect metrics used by commercial for-profit organizations only result in chaotic outcomes. Our editorial in JTCVS suggests some solutions

Jack was born with half a heart. He had 3 operations before he turned 3 due to a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, where the left side of the heart fails to develop.
"We truly re-engineer or redirect the blood flow inside of the heart so that the right ventricle is now that main pumping chamber," says @emilebachamd.
Now, at 12, he's a star hockey player and even started a clothing line that pays it forward: abc7ny.com/jack-foley-hypopl…

An artificial heart valve that can grow with the patient! Read about this new prototype from @ColumbiaPS's Dr. David Kalfa and his @ColumbiaMed team that could eventually reduce the number of surgeries many kids born with congenital heart disease undergo. bit.ly/3ROzR8p
An artificial heart valve that grows may eliminate risky surgeries needed by many kids born with heart defects. @columbiaps researchers built a prototype from a biocompatible polyurethane that closely matches the elasticity of natural heart valves.

It was my honor to present on the topic of Ebstein's Anomaly at the Ukrainian Children's Cardiac Center's 18th Ukrainian Congenital Heart Disease Forum. A reminder that despite ongoing wars and other calamities, babies are still being born with CHD and need treatment.

Critical work by Dr. Katherine Fischkoff and team!
The findings of this study may serve as a useful starting point for the development of a dedicated surgical ethics curriculum aimed at better equipping surgeons to navigate the dilemmas they are likely to face in practice.

Great study and congratulations to the authors. Interesting to see how real life results are much better than in trials.
A new study reveals a 5-year survival rate of 93% for patients undergoing low-risk isolated #SAVR. The study, published in @annalsthorsurg, reviewed 42,586 patients at 981 cardiac surgery sites using evidence from #STSNationalDatabase and #CDCgov's NDI. bit.ly/3Q3vKDg
