EnergyPathways #EPP is delighted to announce it is to be awarded a Gas Storage License (GSL) by the North Sea Transition Authority for its flagship MESH project located in the East Irish Sea and onshore in Barrow-in-Furness.
This decision marks a major milestone in the development of the wider MESH project, with the GSL spanning a substantial offshore area that could support up to 60 large-scale salt storage caverns with potential for multi terawatt-hour scale energy storage and is expected to be Britain’s largest integrated energy storage facility.
The planned MESH Project has already been designated by the UK Government as a project of “national significance” and will comprise compressed air energy storage (CAES), natural gas storage transitioning to hydrogen storage and complementary hydrogen production for clean power and sustainable industry uses.
EnergyPathways plans the following:
· A natural gas storage facility that will double Britain’s meagre gas storage capacity and provide up to 6 days of national energy supply, securing Britain’s energy future and reducing its over-dependence on expensive gas imports.
· CAES storage of 300 MW / 55 GWh capacity, which is expected to be Britain’s largest LDES facility. This will provide game-changing “days not hours” of electrical storage, essential to harness the billions of pounds of wind power currently being wasted and passed on to consumer bills;
· Low-carbon dispatchable power generation that will be far cheaper than the expensive gas-fired power upon which Britain relies and which sets the power prices for all of Britain’s electricity, including renewables;
· Low-cost hydrogen production capability that will be used to further decarbonise MESH dispatchable power and new sustainable industries planned in Barrow-in-Furness, including EnergyPathways’ proposed graphite production plant; and
· A project that delivers homegrown energy and requires little or no government support at no added cost to consumer bills.
EnergyPathways, along with its Tier One partners, including Siemens Energy, Costain plc, Wood plc and Zenith Energy will now progress the MESH project to a Final Investment Decision in 2028 and start up by late 2031. The Company has already initiated several funding and capacity offtake discussions.
EnergyPathways CEO, Ben Clube said:
“I am delighted that we have met the NSTA’s criteria to offer EnergyPathways this crucial Gas Storage Licence, one of only two NSTA energy licence awards in the last two years.
“The UK Government recognises MESH and other forms of long-duration energy storage as having a vital role in lowering energy prices, bolstering energy security and achieving a clean energy system."

Strategic Land Acquisition
EnergyPathways #EPP has taken another important step towards the development of MESH, signing Heads of Terms to acquire strategically located land at Barrow-in-Furness.
The acquisition provides a critical piece of the infrastructure required to connect MESH to existing pipeline networks and establish a hydrogen and natural gas transportation corridor between Barrow and our offshore energy storage facilities in the East Irish Sea.
Importantly, the land:
· Enables MESH to tie back into existing pipeline infrastructure
· Supports connection to the National Gas Transmission system
· Provides optionality for the re-use of strategically important existing pipeline infrastructure
· Accelerates our hydrogen and graphite business to generate early revenues
· Advances another critical milestone on the pathway towards Final Investment Decision
This comes as UK energy policy increasingly recognises the importance of energy storage, domestic energy security and low-carbon infrastructure, including the recent announcements on Jackdaw, Transitional Energy Certificates, and the new £2 billion Energy Wealth Fund.
MESH is set to become the UK’s largest integrated energy storage facility, combining strategic gas and hydrogen storage with long-duration electricity storage (LDES), alongside hydrogen industries, graphite and ammonia.
We continue to rapidly advance MESH, securing the land, connections, and strategic assets needed to move the project toward delivery.

At EnergyPathways #EPP, we believe the case for the urgent development of gas storage has never been clearer.
Increasing UK gas storage capacity is critical to strengthening energy security and protecting consumers from the volatility of global energy markets. As Britain builds more renewable generation, gas storage will also play an essential role in balancing the intermittent supply and keeping the lights on.
Developing gas storage assets that can tie back into existing infrastructure can also extend the life of strategically important UK energy facilities, while supporting British jobs, skills and supply chains.

#EPP “Today’s approval of the Jackdaw gas field, the new £2 billion Energy Wealth Fund and Transitional Energy Certificates (TECs) are significant for the UK’s energy future.
It signals the Government’s recognition that a secure and reliable gas supply is critical to the transition to a cleaner energy system and delivering more affordable energy.
Britain relies heavily on gas power to back up its renewable generation and keep the lights on. This, combined with gas’ price-setting role on our electricity prices, means the nation’s growing dependence on gas imports is leaving it vulnerable to global energy shocks.
This has been brought into sharp focus this year by Russian gas flows to Europe and disruption to Gulf exports, which have driven up global prices and pushed up our energy bills.
With the North Sea in rapid decline alongside the massive expansion of renewable wind generation, the strategic case for more gas storage and electricity storage has never been clearer. Storage is essential to strengthening our future energy independence.
We welcome the Government’s announcement today as well as its previous interim report on the “Gas System in Transition: Security of Supply” consultation, which both further reinforce the strategic case for more investment in storage infrastructure.
With MESH, in the East Irish Sea and Barrow-in-Furness, EnergyPathways is developing the UK’s largest integrated energy storage facility that combines strategic gas and hydrogen storage alongside long-duration electricity storage (LDES). We look forward to playing our part in delivering a cleaner energy system while lowering energy costs and strengthening energy security.
MESH is a homegrown energy solution. Its pathway to development is significantly strengthened with today’s announcement.”

EnergyPathways #EPP MESH project addresses a problem already costing Britain tens of millions of pounds a day: storing surplus renewable power and returning it when and where the system needs it.
As highlighted by The Guardian, the cost of balancing Britain’s electricity grid recently reached almost £50 million in a single day, as transmission constraints forced the system to curtail renewable generation while paying other generators to produce power elsewhere.
September alone reportedly saw balancing costs reach a record £505 million.
This is the challenge MESH is designed to address.
Strategically located in the East Irish Sea and onshore at Barrow-in-Furness, MESH will provide large-scale, long-duration energy storage (LDES), capturing surplus wind power when the system cannot absorb it and delivering that energy when Britain needs it most.
As renewable generation continues to grow, Britain needs storage infrastructure capable of delivering seconds-to-seasons flexibility for a more secure energy system. Storage is the cornerstone of energy independence and reducing Britain’s increasing reliance on imports.
MESH is designed to provide that capability — helping reduce system costs, improve grid resilience and make better use of Britain’s growing renewable energy resources. The emerging AI sector in Britain can only thrive with secure, reliable and affordable energy.
The economic case for long-duration energy storage is becoming clearer by the day.

EnergyPathways #EPP has secured a series of technical agreements that accelerate MESH towards bankability while delivering significant cost savings.
The agreements provide access to a suite of existing high-quality geotechnical data and analytical services for the development of MESH’s salt caverns in the East Irish Sea and at Barrow-in-Furness.
This work will:
Save over £20 million by removing the need for additional appraisal drilling or seismic acquisition
Further de-risk the geotechnical model for MESH’s salt caverns
Support financial bankability certification
Advance the pathway towards infrastructure debt financing for cavern construction
Satisfy a significant part of our GS009 storage Licence obligations
The salt sequence fundamentals are ideal for large scale salt cavern construction, with 500–600 metres of thick and predictable bedded. These technical agreements represent another important step in de-risking the MESH development.
Importantly, this demonstrates how the proceeds from our recent fundraise are being deployed efficiently and with a clear focus on shareholder value — accelerating critical development work while identifying opportunities to materially reduce pre-FID expenditure.
We expect to save more than £20 million and move more rapidly towards bankability certification, a critical milestone in accessing infrastructure debt financing.

EnergyPathways #EPP is accelerating development of its low-carbon hydrogen and graphite facility at Barrow-in-Furness, aiming to generate revenue by 2029, with potential for an earlier project start-up, subject to further design optimisation and supply chain management.
Hydrogen, graphite and ammonia production form the third pillar of MESH, alongside long-duration energy storage and strategic gas and hydrogen storage.
The project is not dependent on Government commercial support, involves minimal regulatory process, and benefits from identified land and existing gas and power connections. Engineering is progressing with our technology partners Hazer/KBR and Hycamite.
The opportunity is significant. The UK currently imports all of its graphite, despite it being designated a critical and growth mineral. Our methane-splitting technology will produce low-carbon hydrogen alongside solid graphitic carbon, creating a potential new domestic supply.
With work progressing across engineering, land, grid connections, offtake and strategic investment, our objective is to fast-track Hydrogen Industries, generate early cash flow for MESH and establish EnergyPathways as a major UK graphite supplier.

#EPP The UK Ammonia Alliance’s newly launched Low-Carbon Ammonia Roadmap highlights the significant opportunity for Britain to rebuild domestic ammonia production and establish low-carbon ammonia as a strategic national asset for food security, decarbonisation and economic growth.
The global market for clean ammonia is growing, yet the UK has effectively no domestic ammonia production capability, leaving supply heavily dependent on imports and exposed to global market disruption.
Ammonia is critical to Britain’s food security, energy security and national security. Strengthening domestic production should therefore be an important part of building a more resilient UK economy.
At EnergyPathways plc, our plans for MESH include using methane pyrolysis technology to split natural gas into low-carbon hydrogen and solid carbon. The hydrogen could be sold directly for storage and flexible power generation or blended with nitrogen to produce low-carbon ammonia.
There is a clear market opportunity. Ammonia is a critical feedstock for fertiliser production and has growing potential as a low-carbon fuel and energy carrier.
For EnergyPathways, our Hydrogen Industries project, to be located at Barrow-In-Furness, has the potential to create an early revenue stream for MESH with significant longer-term growth potential, while supporting the development of a more secure domestic supply of strategically important products.
The UK Ammonia Alliance’s roadmap is an important contribution to building the policy and investment framework needed to unlock this opportunity.

Wasted wind added £1.5 billion to UK electricity bills in 2025. On government forecasts it could rise to £8 billion over the coming years.
At #InvestorSummit 2026, Ben Clube of @energy_pathways explained why. Wind farms in Scotland are paid to switch off when the grid can't carry their power south, then gas plants are paid to switch on when the wind drops. “Essentially the consumer pays twice.”
EnergyPathways' Mesh project would store that surplus wind in salt caverns under the East Irish Sea: 55 GWh of storage and over 100 hours of supply. The UK currently holds under six days of gas storage, against an EU average of 80 days, and Mesh's gas storage would add six more.

#EPP As highlighted in this Channel 4 News clip, the challenges facing the UK energy system are clear.
With UK gas storage capacity a fraction of that across much of Europe, our energy system and economy remain exposed to global price volatility and supply disruption.
Developing long-duration energy storage at scale is critical to both energy security and the UK’s clean energy transition, alongside domestic gas storage.
Greater storage capacity can deliver significant benefits:
- Lower energy costs for households and businesses
- Support Britain’s reindustrialisation
- Reduce reliance on expensive “just-in-time” gas imports
- Harness British jobs, skills and supply chains
- Strengthen national energy security
At EnergyPathways, we recognise the urgency of this challenge and are accelerating our MESH project accordingly.
MESH is designed to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the UK energy system.
Our objective is simple: accelerate MESH towards operation to deliver lower energy costs, strengthen national energy security, and support British jobs, skills, and growth.
