1/ My heart hurts after listening to the testimony at a hearing at the Cook County Board yesterday, on the conditions in the Juvenile Detention Center. A lawyer from @equip4equality testified about the use of prone (face down) restraints on kids, which is illegal in IL.

Commissioner Moore asks for clarification on the use of holding pods. Earlier Dixon said there were no holding pods, but now says there are "reset pods." Wilson says the holding pods Shapiro referenced earlier are actually "living units to hold" kids who are removed from class.

A staff member from the JTDC speaking now alongside Dixon. She describes a new program called Reset that's aimed at reducing punitive discipline - kids in the program work on "packets" that help them correct their behavior.

In his statement to the Board, Dixon was adamant that there was no "sitting on the wall" disciplinary policy, but Shapiro says investigators saw kids sitting in chairs lined up against the walls for hours - many of them reported sitting on the wall for 10 to 15 days.

In direct contradiction to Dixon's statement, attorney Rachel Shapiro from @equip4equality says youth reported injuries due to the use of prone restraints including one teenager who had a seizure.
