Thanks for the shout-out! Here's a live link (2013-ish) for those who want to play with it

It's scientific documentation, so no AI scaling. Just very very close photos with robot and a Hasselblad H6D 400 MS. Here's a link to the PyCon 2020 keynote I gave about it: youtube.com/watch?v=z_hm5oX7…

Ah. I guess it's just an illusion that the lines seem to become increasingly parallel to the parallels even below the equator.

Cool! These curves have decreasing angles with respect to lines of constant latitude. What does it look like at the south pole?
There's a newer image of the Night Watch with 717 gigapixels and 5 µm resolution (16 times as big as this one)!

Thanks! To be clear, there is only one "Curtain Viewer", not a family tree. These efforts by others to gain reputation/business by copying without credit are academically dishonest and, in the eyes of the Dutch legal system, unlawful. The Curtain Viewer isn't open source yet.
One of the examples you are using looks like it came from the Leiden collection, but I improved the Curtain Viewer for them back in 2013. They still have a residual page from when I made the demonstrations for them. See "Erdmann Research Group". theleidencollection.com/Leid…

Thanks! It's not done with a Hirox, though. It's a Hasselblad H6D 400c MS camera on a 5-axis robot, with a lot of machine learning behind it to ensure sharp color-accurate photos every time.

The PyCon keynote will hopefully answer your questions. If not, I'm happy to answer them here.

Nearby, an easily resolved smalt (ground cobalt glass) pigment particle:

One of my favorites: a tiny (1.5 mm) swirl of unmixed paints in the cuff of Lieutenant Willem van Ruytenburch:

Individual paint pigment particles are easily resolved along with the sequence of brush strokes in the coat of arms of Amsterdam:

At this resolution, we can observe the paint layer stratigraphy at the edges of cracks since those layers tend to exhibit more abrasion:

Happily, I have permission to share the image with my viewer (the Curtain Viewer, same as boschproject.org), which has a mode to sync the panes to focus on the same point. Drag one pane and the rest will follow; each has its own independent zoom:
