NEW: DC911/@OUC_DC Director Heather McGaffin has been appointed as the Director of the Department of Emergency and Customer Communications for the City of Alexandria, VA starting January 4th. City Manager James Parajon says he looks to McGaffin "to strengthen our 911 and 311 services."
According to sources, McGaffin knew she was not likely to be in the plans of the incoming administration. Sources inside OUC have said for a while it appeared McGaffin was preparing her exit. Today, she emailed OUC workers that January 2nd would be her official last day leading the troubled 911 and 311 call centers.

This is great news. The hard work - as always - is in execution. We recently had 2 big belly cans deployed thru the pilot in the shared NPS parcel north of Grant Circle. I’m looking to DOH and DPW to provide analysis of rodent population changes pre- and post-installation.
The likely next mayor declares war on rats and promises an official “Rat Czar.” Just yesterday, her RAT Act was combined with @CMCHenderson’s REMY Act. Read more here: dc.citycast.fm/dc-politics/d…

The National Guard and federal agents have arrived to the scene of a shooting in Petworth/Washington DC.
A witness says they observed a gunman hop out of a car and begin to shoot near the metro station.
Numerous spent shell casings have been marked by evidence markers in the roadway. The search for the gunman remains ongoing, with MPD’s Falcon 🚁 circling from above. #DCCrime

An important element of this story is the information vacuum. Since it's the feds taking the lead, it's very hard to know what's going on. When I initially asked DCPS whether they knew of anything going on, they said they didn't. That vacuum can quickly breed panic.

NEW: The 6-year-old boy who nearly drowned at a D.C. soccer camp last week is no longer intubated or sedated, his family's attorney tells @CityCast_DC.
Adonis Jackson was found at the bottom of a University of D.C. pool while a lifeguard was on lunch break. Multiple university officials have been placed on leave in connection with the incident.
He remains in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. His family is asking supporters to send audio messages of "words of encouragement, a favorite memory, a song, or simply a familiar voice saying his name" to [email protected]
"The reason we ask is simple. The hardest hours in that room are the quiet ones, after visitors have gone and the monitors are the only sound, when the night terrors come.... no child should have to lie awake in an intensive care unit wondering whether anyone is out there. Every voice we play is proof that he is not alone."
