SCOOP: UC Berkeley math professor Zvezdelina Stankova admitted to using an AI tool in an op-ed urging the UC system to re-adopt SAT and ACT requirements in admissions. The article, published in the SF Standard, was flagged as 33% AI-generated or AI-assisted by detector Pangram. A similar result was found in a June open letter from STEM faculty advocating for standardized testing. The letter was signed by thousands of academics, including five Nobel laureates, and was partially written by Stankova. Read our coverage at the link below: dailycal.org/news/campus/uc-…

Most American students are already using A.I. to generate writing. I took a step back to ask: What does cognitive science tell us about what writing *does* for us? Is there a way to teach and learn alongside this technology without degrading skills? nytimes.com/2026/08/17/us/st…

If you think that a scholarly focus on inequality in an era of historically extreme inequality is an "abdication of scholarly duty," you might just be an apologist for ruling elites
“Sociology’s relentless focus on race, gender and class, its emphasis on the need for social change over the benefits of social stability and its obsession with inequality amount to an abdication of scholarly duty.”

Just asked a HS senior what her takeaway from a weeklong SAT camp was. Her answer: “That I don’t want to be one of those adults who never gets past thinking that their SAT score really, really matters.”

A lot of people on this site think the big problem with college is the professors' personal politics. In the new Gallup-Lumina poll, the percentage who agree is 11%. The big problem with college for the public is of course cost.

June 29th marks three years since the Students for Fair Admissions v. Harvard SCOTUS ruling that banned affirmative action. Black student enrollment is dropping at many selective colleges. Wil Del Pilar breaks down the impact: bit.ly/4ovg9xu

“Any little burp or bleep coming out of Harvard” is a A+ phrase.
I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate that I couldn't care less what Harvard does about grade inflation or indeed about anything else. It educates a tiny fraction of hand-picked students. The attention given to any little burp or bleep coming out of Harvard is bizarre

I’ve known hundreds of journalists, but I’ve known only one who messages sources about me, a fellow journalist.

Glad someone said this. The fixation on a narrow sliver of higher ed is tiresome.
Yeah I wrote a brief on it. And maybe it's just my algorithm still feeding it to me. But, fellow media, how much more *are* we gonna write about a report from 10 faculty at an Ivy League institution unrepresentative of most of higher ed?

For years, there has been a dominant narrative about college: Earning a degree is the surest pathway to the American dream. Lately, though, thanks to AI and economic shifts, that story line has begun to unravel. chronicle.com/article/why-th…

This year, I learned that the students who need remedial math at UC San Diego are supposedly undeserving of their spots, but the student who wrote the dubious essay at the U. of Oklahoma is a victim/hero who was supposedly treated unfairly. How very interesting indeed!

Calling all college journalists and recent or soon-to-be grads: @chronicle is hiring two fellows to join our newsroom in summer 2026. We'd love for you to be one of them.

If there was one thing I wish I could do, it’s send articles like this to the parents and coaches of any black football recruit considering Texas A&M and have them impart what it means when a school’s governing body hates diversity and inclusion so much.

I read the documents ED published yesterday about ACTS, the new admissions & graduation survey the Trump Administration created to "catch" colleges violating the SFFA decision & civil rights law. Here's my summary. tl;dr: this is happening next month. wp.me/p6kg2q-hZ
