Soccer isn’t an American sport, and half time shows are uniquely American. Feels really weird at the World Cup Finals

🚨 Peter Drury Breaks Silence: Questionable Calls, Cancelled Goals & FIFA Favouritism – Has Football Become a Scripted Show? 🗣Peter Drury “After years spent analyzing football matches and commentating on the game at the highest level, I can honestly say that what we witnessed today between Argentina and Egypt was unlike anything I’ve seen in my entire career. How that was awarded as a penalty remains a complete mystery. The contact, if any, looked minimal at best, yet the decision stood. It’s becoming harder and harder to watch the sport without feeling that the beautiful game is slowly turning into something of a joke for millions of fans around the world. The officiating has been strangely “clean” almost suspiciously so yet it leaves serious questions about consistency and impartiality. Then there was Egypt’s goal, ruled out for reasons that still aren’t entirely clear. Why was it disallowed? In the same match, when Argentina scored their decisive goal, there appeared to be a clear foul in the build-up that neither the referee nor VAR chose to review properly. These are the moments that make supporters feel the outcome is no longer decided purely on the pitch. There’s a growing narrative out there and it’s hard to ignore that Lionel Messi is being protected as FIFA’s golden boy. With Cristiano Ronaldo no longer part of the international scene, some believe the powers that be are determined to keep Messi’s story alive for as long as possible because his presence still drives massive global interest and viewing figures. Whether that’s true or not, the pattern of decisions in key moments only fuels that conversation. passion, and the unpredictable nature of who wins on any given day. But when decisions repeatedly go one way, when valid goals are chalked off and questionable ones are given, and when VAR seems to miss obvious incidents, it starts to feel like something else is at play. The game deserves better. Fans deserve transparency, consistency, and the simple belief that the result is earned not influenced. These are the moments that test our love for the sport. And right now, that love is being stretched thin.“

It’s incredible that over 50 players at this World Cup are from the Paris area. If only someone had made a BBC documentary about it…. They have! It was a great experience talking to players, coaches & historians about the magic on Paris’s streets. 👇 bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3ct6cd…

As a former goalie, this tactic legit blew my mind. I expect this to become the norm next season across the big leagues. Can’t wait to check penalty statistics in a year!!!

Here's a mind-blowing statistic: despite making up just ~0.2% of the global population, players with ethnic heritage from the former Yugoslavia are 7.5% of players in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32 (overrepresented by 40x) and play for 9/32 or 28% of teams! -> 🇭🇷🇧🇦🇦🇹🇦🇺🇨🇭🇺🇸🇨🇦🇸🇪🇩🇪

Mistral CEO Arthur Mensch walked into the French parliament this week and told lawmakers Europe has exactly two years to build independent AI infrastructure or hand over one trillion dollars in spending to American tech companies. The math he laid out should be front-page news. This is not a technology story. It is a macroeconomic one. Global wages are fifty trillion dollars. AI will cost around ten percent of that. Europe's share is nine trillion. Which means over one trillion dollars in AI spending over the next five years flowing somewhere. Europe already sends 250 billion dollars a year to the US in digital services. Every dollar that leaves funds American R&D. None of it comes back. Mario Draghi's competitiveness report last year made the same point from a different angle. Europe needs eight hundred billion euros in annual investment just to close its existing productivity gap with the US. AI dependency makes that gap structural. You cannot close a productivity gap when the tool driving productivity is owned by your competitor. Mensch compared it to gas. The same way Europe discovered too late what energy dependence costs in a crisis, it is standing at the same crossroads with AI right now. The compute is being allocated today. The chips are being spoken for today. Europe is watching it happen and calling it a technology debate. It is not. It is a sovereignty one. Watch the full podcast on YouTube at @CNBCi

Biden successively withdrew the U.S. from Afghanistan, a war he didn’t start. Trump started an Iran war he then lost to catastrophic effect. The differing media coverage and elite discourse shows how loathsome our establishment truly is.

What makes soccer special and why the US is being left behind? There are at least 10 different nationalities in the Real Madrid locker room. Most World Cup players speak at least 2-3 languages. Multiculturalism is the default.

1994 I was fresh out of college in DC watching every single World Cup match, then staying out all night partying with whatever fans were in the city. It was a memorable summer. In contrast, I’ll maybe watch a half dozen matches this time around.

AI writing produces an illusion of creativity. Data on >370k college essays: After chatGPT, personal statements seemed more creative because they used more varied words—but actually featured less original ideas. Machines favor homogeneity. Humans excel at diversity of thought.

“AND YOU STILL DARE TO OPEN YOUR MOUTH…” Sasha Legerman: This is too accurate not to share. This Australian’s response to Trump’s rant that “NATO does nothing for America” is absolutely devastating: “Mate. You run a country where 600,000 homeless people will sleep on the streets tonight. A country where 40% of adults can’t cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment, and people ration it just to stay alive. A country where medical debt is the number one cause of bankruptcy. A country where women die in hospital parking lots because doctors are too afraid of abortion laws to treat miscarriages. You imprison more of your own citizens than any country on Earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. In the land of the free, 2 million people sit in cages, and a quarter of them haven’t even been convicted of anything. They’re simply too poor to afford bail. Your life expectancy is declining. You’re the only developed nation where that’s happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba’s. Your children practice active shooter drills between math and English classes while you sell defense stocks to your friends. Your minimum wage hasn’t changed in 15 years. Your teachers work two jobs, your veterans sleep under bridges, and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that never attacked you. And now a convicted criminal — found liable for sexual abuse, defending a pedophile, sleeping with a porn star, and running the biggest dumpster-fire campaign since the Taliban — is thanking you for yet another disaster. And you call Greenland badly governed? Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody there goes bankrupt because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because insurance refused treatment. ‘NATO wasn’t there when we needed them.’ When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn’t even in NATO, and we still showed up. For twenty years. And then you left at 2 a.m. without telling anyone and left everybody else to clean up the mess. You don’t care that a great nation is being terrorized by your friend, and you haven’t shown it a single ounce of sympathy. So maybe before calling other countries badly governed, take a look at your own backyard, you aluminum siding salesman with a spray tan. The only thing badly managed in this picture is your damn mouth. And you still dare to lecture the rest of the world?”
