Sorry to hear Dame Esther Rantzen has died. I will always remember her moving “That’s Life” segment with Sir Nicholas Winton, hero of the Holocaust, who rescued so many Jewish children. She was a great Briton. May her memory be a blessing.

Very sad to hear that Dame Esther Rantzen has died. Through her decades of campaigning, including founding Childline and The Silver Line, she changed countless lives and gave a voice to people who often went unheard. And I will always admire the characteristic courage and openness with which she spoke about her illness, making us all think about the difficult questions we face at the end of life. My thoughts are with her family and all who loved her.

@andyburnham As a social worker (just over the water to where you are this week, on the Wirral), I really want to hear more about this. Something needs to change, and I really hope social workers are consulted on changes, as the ones seeing the issues day in, day out.

Labour have been forced to pause their half-baked plans for local councils. At every turn, they've ignored the public and tried to draw the most convenient boundaries for themselves. Will they now make their reasons for the new boundaries public, so that we can scrutinise them?

The shambolic handling of LGR - and what it says about Ministers’ both disrespect for and lack of understanding of Local Government - is as depressing as it is infuriating.

What’s needed now is accountability, some actual learning and a very clear apology. What worries me most is how little listening took place and how flawed the modelling has been from the start. It’s turned into an expensive, undemocratic mess, with politics that feel far too murky for comfort. LGR has shown just how completely misaligned central government is from the communities and citizens it’s supposed to serve. When ideology is allowed to trump evidence informed data, things go wrong fast. The fact that the justified evidence behind these decisions hasn’t been shared is, frankly, sinister at worst and amateurish at best. Even if the LGA can’t reach consensus on its own statements, I hope there’s at least agreement on something equally concerning, the so‑called “fair funding review” is anything but fair. It’s stripping local authorities like mine of millions and millions of pounds, with catastrophic consequences, especially for social care. And I’m not convinced it’s even lawful either. Maybe that’s the next injustice that needs serious focus?

#LGR is off the table, great work @AngelaRayner & @andyburnham and hopefully @SteveReedMP won’t be allowed anywhere near a government department or Secretary of State ever again 🙏
I understand @andyburnham was in Hertfordshire today and has suggested he will take a look at the awful decisions taken by the now departed @SteveReedMP and thank goodness for that 👇Seeing the county which means everything to so many of us completely screwed up cannot be allowed to happen 👇 LGR - At What Cost whilst breaking all our ‘Herts’? ermate.wordpress.com/2026/07…
