70 years ago, Hungarians took to the streets of Budapest to defy communist oppression. Ordinary people stood up to dictatorship and demanded the right to live in freedom, dignity and peace. Their courage also inspired many in occupied Estonia.
The revolution was crushed by Soviet military force, followed by brutal repression.
But today, we honour the courage and sacrifice of those who stood up for freedom and kept hope alive.
Estonians and Hungarians may speak very different Finno-Ugric languages, but we share a deep understanding of the value of freedom and the need to defend it.
