Very pleased to be able to announce this funding to help support planning for Lung Cancer Screening!
w/ @NCIGlobalHealth colleague Paul Dora Rose, @PatrickNRedmond @jamesfomahony @QUBCancerProf, @publichealthni @HSELive Screening teams and others! #Teamwork
We are leading the charge in the fight against #LungCancer, thanks to a new cross-border project aimed at establishing screening programmes across the island of #Ireland.
The LUNG SHOT project will bring leading experts and key stakeholders in #NorthernIreland and the Republic of Ireland together to collaborate on tackling the disease.
Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in Northern Ireland and the third most common #Cancer in the Republic of Ireland.
Despite growing evidence that #EarlyDetection through #Screening can significantly reduce mortality, neither region have yet funded a formal lung cancer screening programme. This will make the new programmes the first of their kind on the island of Ireland.
“This project is incredibly significant as it will enable us to link with patient advocacy groups and community partnerships to ensure that the screening programmes are tailored to local needs, while benefiting from international expertise and best practices.
“The findings will provide vital insights into how lung cancer screening can be integrated into existing #Healthcare systems, with the potential to save lives by detecting cancer earlier, when treatment is more effective.” (Dr Ethna McFerran, lead investigator from @QubPGJCCR, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences).

A landmark study has estimated that #AirPollution is responsible for more than 130 #LungCancer cases annually in #NorthernIreland.
Working with an international team of experts, our researchers linked the postcodes of more than 900 lung cancer patients and over 8,000 cancer-free controls to high-resolution historical air pollution maps.
This innovative approach allowed them to estimate long-term exposure to PM2.5 – tiny particles that penetrate deep into the lungs – and calculate the associated cancer risk.
“These findings remind us that air pollution is not just an environmental issue—it is a clear and preventable threat to public health. Every lung cancer case linked to air pollution represents suffering that could have been avoided if we act decisively to reduce exposure.” (Mrs Rawan Alhattab, lead author and PhD Student from @CPH_QUB)

Attending: Regional Specialist Palliative Care Nursing Conference @UlsterUni.
PHA data show NI has ~110 FTE CNS in 2024 — just 1 nurse per 167 deaths each year (5.8/100k).
In England, the ratio is ~8/100k.
A stark inequality in palliative care provision.

Rarely-used skin cancer machine, ‘’might therefore be best positioned as a regional resource, or relocated to a centre where plastics and cosmetic referrals are higher. A sensible next step would be for NICAN to review how to maximise its benefit.”

Ireland tracks cancer drug spend (€151M in 2022; €667M Jan–Aug 2023) but not screening costs. Screening is cheaper per QALY (€2–30k vs €50–150k+). We need transparent data to align cancer investments for maximum impact.

Dignity in death & the complexity of its delivery go well beyond a binary vote, whilst having one is democratic - but not having standards and statutory palliative care provision funded as a core principle and function in a society *first* is coercive - I stand w/ Marie Curie
Assisted Dying Vote
It is more crucial than ever that our governments across the UK ensure that there is palliative care available for anyone who needs it.
It is impossible to imagine that this could be achieved without an assessment of the quality and distribution of palliative care services currently available.
