maybe crippling optimism
“I am optimistic this is going to go well,” Sean Locke, who heads the NH Attorney General’s Election Law Unit, said in an interview last week. “I suffer from maybe crippling optimism. But we have no indications that anything should kind of go awry.” nhpr.org/nh-news/2026-10-26/…

Critics love to say that twenty-year-old American Marines on New Year's Eve liberty in Japan only care about partying.
On December 31, 2016, four young U.S. Marines were walking in Yokosuka when an SUV plunged five stories off a garage.
The vehicle slammed upside down onto the pavement with a Japanese family of five inside. Eight local bystanders and two U.S. Navy Sailors pulled on the doors, but the crushed roof jammed the steel shut.
Waiting ten minutes for hydraulic rescue jaws meant the children trapped upside down inside the compressed cabin would suffocate or bleed out.
Marine Lance Corporal James Flores shouted that they had to flip the heavy vehicle upright by hand, and Lance Corporal Raheem Gilliam used the Japanese numbers he had just practiced in his barracks to unite the crowd.
"Ichi, ni, san!" Gilliam roared.
Four Marines, two Sailors, and eight Japanese citizens locked their fingers under the twisted frame and deadlifted the SUV upright in one heave.
The Marines crawled into the glass, pulled two young Japanese boys out alive, and used their Combat Lifesaver training to stop the bleeding until ambulances arrived.
Walking to the emergency room afterward to get his own cut hands checked, Gilliam did not brag. He quietly called Oklahoma just to tell his mother he loved her.
Honor needs no translator when good men lift together.

2/ woman living in a car with a bunch of cats in a parking lot. How much coaching did Vivek have to give her? Did she even remember she had a daughter? It’s bad enough for @VivekGRamaswamy to take the side of a child rapist over his victim just to save his dying campaign.

Thread from a reporter for a conservative (and news-breaking) NH outlet, kept out of the Kamala event
🧵I report for @NewHampJournal, New Hampshire's only right-of-center political news publication. I've covered @AndyBeshearKY, @ReverendWarnock, @MikieSherrill and @GavinNewsom, who happily answered my question.
And here's what it's like covering @KamalaHarris in New Hampshire

How cool is this!
Today is a mathematical date we won't see again for 78 years.
10/24/26
10² + 24² = 26²
It's called a Pythagorean Triple Day. There are infinitely many Pythagorean triples, but only 12 dates this century satisfy the equation.Today is the last.
Next one: March 4, 2105.

Most people know Dr. Peter Hotez from his television appearances during COVID, his defense of vaccination, and the relentless attacks directed at him on social media.
I know Peter as a friend. And I want to tell you about another part of his life that rarely enters those arguments.
For more than four decades, Peter has devoted much of his scientific career to diseases that afflict some of the poorest people on Earth. Diseases that cause enormous suffering but attract relatively little commercial investment because the people who need treatment often cannot afford to pay for it.
Hookworm. Schistosomiasis. Chagas disease. Leishmaniasis.
These are hardly household names. Their victims rarely make headlines, and the scientists working on them seldom become celebrities.
Peter chose this field long before COVID, long before the cable news appearances, and long before strangers began calling him a pharmaceutical industry shill.
His career deserves a closer look.
Because the work tells a story that is almost entirely absent from the accusations made against him.

A wild story: the CEO of a US energy company whose plans were discussed during the Witkoff-Kushner-Putin negotiations resigns. Why? He learned that his company's main investor is a sanctioned Russian company, not the UAE

THIS SHOULD BE GETTING MORE ATTENTION
Wedgewood Polls admitted that the vast majority of its election polls were based on fabricated data.
And these major news orgs fell for it: The New York Times, POLITICO, Newsweek, MS NOW, The Hill, The Daily Beast & Breitbart.
HARM CAUSED: In Michigan, Senate candidate Mallory McMorrow says a fabricated poll showing her at just 9% devastated campaign morale, dried up donations and contributed to pressure for her to drop out.
Ummm…RAGBRAI? The best-known & longest mass bicycling event in the world.
That and innumerable other cycling events/activities make Iowa a bicycling powerhouse that delivers a woke $1.4B annually to Iowa’s economy (motorcycling, $773M)
Joe Mitchell: "Thank God you're building the ballroom. Thank God you're getting rid of those awful bike lanes. We don't ride bicycles in Iowa."
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Iowa has extensive cycling infrastructure including bike lanes and trails, plus RAGBRAI, the world's largest multi-day bicycle tour which has crossed the state annually since 1973 with thousands of riders.
