Singer Makhadzi Breaks Down in Botswana Court as Legal Ordeal Ends in Out-of-Court Settlement
Award-winning South African musician Ndivhudzannyi "Makhadzi" Ralivhona broke down in tears inside a Botswana courtroom today after reaching an out-of-court settlement that finally allows her to return home to South Africa.
The Gama hitmaker had been stranded in Botswana since Saturday, 31 October 2026, after her passport and vehicle were seized following an urgent High Court order obtained by local entertainment promoter Gilbert "PP" Seagile of Gilbert Promotions.
Seagile had filed a lawsuit claiming P500,000 in damages over a breached contract regarding a failed One Woman Show concert.
The legal standoff escalated earlier this week when Makhadzi published an emotional video on social media alleging she was being "held hostage" and exploited after her travel documents were confiscated.
The situation prompted a swift diplomatic intervention from the South African High Commission in Gaborone and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) to ensure her safety.
In her broadcast, the singer vehemently denied intentionally defaulting on any agreements.
She clarified that she had actually paid over the necessary funds to an intermediary, stating that the person responsible for paying the local Botswana event organisers had failed to do so.
Following an intense session in court, the legal teams representing both Makhadzi and Gilbert Promotions successfully brokered a mutual agreement to settle the contractual dispute amicably outside of formal litigation.
With the settlement finalised, all legal charges against the musician have been officially withdrawn.
Relieved but emotionally exhausted, Makhadzi wept as the court returned her travel documents and cleared her to leave the country.
Her legal team noted that she is eager to return to South Africa immediately to honour outstanding studio commitments and resume preparations for her upcoming album release.

Workers continue to face unfair labour practices, delayed dispute resolution and unsafe working conditions, Swapo Party MP Justina Jonas told the National Assembly during the Mid-Year Budget Review debate.
Jonas said labour laws must be enforced across all workplaces, including mines, farms, factories, construction sites, shops, security services, transport and domestic work.
She said labour inspections need more staff, transport and resources to ensure employers comply with labour standards and workers' rights are protected.
Jonas also called for more preventive workplace inspections, adequate protective equipment and proper investigations into workplace accidents.
On employment, she said the government must focus on creating secure and sustainable jobs, with young people needing access to skills training, apprenticeships and workplace experience.
She also called for improved social protection through sustainable arrangements for the National Pension Fund, Unemployment Fund and National Medical Aid Fund.
Jonas said the rising cost of rent, transport, food, electricity, medical aid and debt is putting pressure on workers' salaries, urging the government to address these costs through measures such as affordable housing, serviced land and accessible healthcare.
She also called for meaningful engagement between government, employers and trade unions in shaping and monitoring the national budget.

Stop asking us about people you no longer see us with. We don't know whether it's out of concern or because you're trying to see if our version of the story matches the one you already heard. Either way, stick with that version.
