Local news matters deeply to me & all news layoffs are upsetting But after spending 2 yrs scouring local news to report on ICE arresting citizens, using dangerous chokeholds, breaking car windows, hear me when I say: @mcclatchy cuts make it harder to hold the powerful accountable

A year ago and 11 months ago, @Observer made 2 great hires - investigative reporters Amber Gaudet and Caitlin McGlade. They moved across the country, excited to join a newspaper with a longstanding tradition of impactful, in-depth investigations. They moved across the country...

For those who have not heard, my job as The State’s environmental reporter was eliminated this week as part of McClatchy’s layoffs. It has been a good 31-year run covering SC’s environment.

"Creating news deserts is a net-positive long-term investment b/c without investigative, damning coverage of businesses, hedge funds will make money off their assets." Democracy dies in darkness.
People ask "But don't the hedge funds want the media to produce the kind of content that makes money?" I've advised hedge funds on the intersection of business, politics, and journalism and let me tell you, no the hedge funds don't want that. Creating news deserts is a net-positive long-term investment b/c without investigative, damning coverage of businesses, hedge funds will make money off their assets. If you are a hedge fund, it's less expensive to just buy a newspaper and starve it than fight a multi-year public relations battle over some of your controversial assets.

We now have a gofundme for the people we lost at The N&O. There is no pressure at all. But should you feel moved, please donate. I have deep love for every one of these people and they deserve all the support in the world. gofundme.com/f/support-laido…

Yesterday, McClatchy laid off more than 90 unionized media workers across 17 publications. The departure of these talented reporters, visual journalists & writers will immediately leave gaping holes in local coverage for dozens of communities across the US.

Thinking of the incredible people I met at @theobserver this past summer 💙 What a small but mighty newsroom that did the best with what they had while keeping their spirits up for us interns. Every person laid off is a huge loss for Charlotte and the Observer’s readership.

Please note: There are nation wide layoffs happening at McClatchy. We are only speaking on behalf of our bargaining units. Statements from other NewsGuild locals and the national union will come out in the following days.
The Pacific Northwest Newspaper Guild is shocked and disappointed by @mcclatchy 's decision to lay off 33% of its unionized workers at the Idaho Statesman, The News Tribune (Tacoma), Tri-City Herald, The Olympian and Bellingham Herald. This includes 10 journalists in Idaho, and seven across Washington. These severe cuts will hobble these news organizations and leave the public throughout the Northwest less informed about the events and decisions that affect them, and with fewer people holding the powerful to account. These are journalists  who investigated local hospitals, served as watchdogs over state and local government, showed up at every high school game, jumped in to cover breaking news like wildfires, covered news in overlooked communities, and monitored development in one of the fastest growing regions in the country. One of these papers will no longer have a dedicated reporter covering city hall. Another will no longer have anyone dedicated to covering the state capitol. McClatchy has decided that short-term profits for a hedge fund matter more than the wellbeing of the communities that its newspapers are supposed to serve. That is a model that is destined to fail.

Long time no see, Twitter! It’s been a minute. I honestly didn’t think I’d be back on here making a post like this, but here we are. I’m so thankful that many of my friends were spared by the McClatchy layoffs, but unfortunately, many of their coworkers can’t say the same.

Boosting from my friend @evamflowe who works at the Charlotte Observer and survived the “blood bath.” I’m still reeling from the hits taken in the midlands at The State and can’t grasp the loss being felt across the country. Share if you can. gofundme.com/f/help-charlott…

This will be a long thread. Please stick with it. The Miami Herald, one of the premier legacy newspapers in America, laid off or wrote off more than 30 positions today – well over one-third of its editorial staff. The cuts include crucial accountability beats. (1)

McClatchy layoffs affected a third of our reporting staff in Charlotte. They covered vital beats. A paper without an education or investigative reporter? A head-scratcher. There's a lot to say, but for now I'll leave it at: please help, if you can. gofund.me/b0b34f55c
The Charlotte Observer today laid off 8 reporters. They helped the paper tonight secure — for the first time in years — a 1st place General Excellence NC press award. I hope McClatchy figures it out before our newsrooms and their communities suffer again.

Today we celebrate World Press Freedom Day, sponsored by UNESCO. Unfortunately, this right is often violated, sometimes flagrantly, sometimes in hidden ways. Let us remember the many journalists and reporters who are victims of war and violence.

You've been asking for this one for years. We heard you. We announced a change in AP style at the @ACESEditors conference today: It's now healthcare, one word, in all uses. We also changed childcare and daycare, closing them up to one word rather than two. This guidance is live on AP Stylebook Online now.
