What’s it like inside the National Weather Service right now? My colleagues @evanbush and @ChaseCainNBC got a rare look inside one local office. They found dedicated people committed to the mission but an office that is unquestionably understaffed. nbcnews.com/science/science-…

10 years ago today, I was working a weekend shift @seattletimes when word came in of a landslide near a small town named Oso. It turned out to be the deadliest landslide in U.S. history. It also became an exhibit for why local journalism matters in a time of crisis. 1/

Terrible news. Craig's writing is sharp and immersive. And I won't forget how accessible and kind he was when I was in my early 20s and bumbling around the Seattle Times. What a loss for Nat Geo.
My new National Geographic just arrived, which includes my latest feature—my 16th, and my last as a senior writer. NatGeo is laying off all of its staff writers. I’ve been so lucky. I got to work w/incredible journalists and tell important, global stories. It’s been an honor.

Are you required to work outdoors? Are you working outside in the heavy smoke that's affecting the Eastern U.S. and other parts of the country? I'd be interested in hearing about your experience for a story I'm working on. [email protected] / DM for my cell
